I’m sorry but the thinking is regressive to say the least. Mansi’s blood will always be the same and Samrat will always have half of her genes. What is this Y chromosome carries genes forward mentality?
In fact the only thing that Chavans have done right is that Mansi is not treated like an outsider and Virat and Samrat are considered sons of the family. I used to think that my family is orthodox but sigh...internet teaches you many things. A child is born to both his parents - he belongs the same amount to his mother’s family as he does to his father’s family. Hinduism is in fact one of the most adapting and fluid religions - more tolerant than most. To say these things in today’s world is shocking to me.
I am the younger daughter of my parents and I recently did my father’s last rites - my elder sister was too pregnant to do it. My entire family supported me while all the outsiders wanted my nephew/son or son in law to do it. But you know what? I did do the last rites because it was my right as my parents’ daughter. This y gene stuff is just patriarchal behavior propagated in the guise of religion. I’m a very religious person but human feelings and relationships are above things that might/might not have been true centuries ago.
If in case you would have only said that Devi should have done the rituals as she is the eldest, I would have whole heartedly supported her.
On one hand we want Sai to not change her name, Virat to stop controlling her every move Just because he is a man and on the other we say that Samrat is not the eldest son because he is the daughter’s son. How hypocritical of us.
FYI, the y chromosome is much more rapidly disappearing than the X chromosome. The earth will most probably not survive till then but it’s worth thinking that this chromosome might be the one which disappears the fastest.
