Part 1
It was with the ringing of the bell that Pakhi heaved in a deep sigh. Lunch break at last!
Springing up from her seat while slinging the bag over her shoulder, she made a beeline for the door while continuing to converse with her friends. Once out of the class, as they went about proceeding towards the ground, their usual lunch spot, she spotted someone familiar in her side view and stopped. Craning her neck, to take a proper look, her eyes widened as she saw Anuj Kapadia lean over the railing.
And without another thought, she started walking towards him, promising her friends to meet up later. She just wanted to greet him. However her brows furrowed confused, when she saw him glance over his shoulder again and yet again.
She followed suit trying to see what he was looking for but to no avail. It was just another staffroom.
She shrugged and halted two paces away from the man.
âHello, sirâ
Anuj whipped his head towards her, clearly caught off guard. And this amused Pakhi yet again.
Anuj smiled then, âHey Pakhi! How are you doing?â
Pakhi returned his smile and nodded, âI am doing good. Aap kaise hain? And aap yahan kya kar rahe hain?
âIâm also doing great. Been a bit busy these days. Anyway, main yahanâŚ.â Anuj trailed glancing towards the staffroom yet again, ââŚbas kisika intezaar kar raha thaâ.
Pakhi chuckled at that. âAcha, but I was asking ki aap school main kya kar rahe hain. I know you are the trustee soâŚ.â
âOhh! Something like that!â Anuj smiled awkwardly. âI was just here to checkâŚâ
âOh, mummy bhi aa gayi!â Pakhi exclaimed with a smile as Anupama emerged from the staffroom.
Anuj turned then, to see her walking in their direction, her eyes fixed on the papers in her hand. And he couldnât help the smile that reached for his lips as he called out her name, âAnupamaâ.
She looked up then, her bespectacled eyes charming him yet again as confusion dawned in them.
âAap yahan?â She asked as she put the papers in her bag.
âTum par chashma bahot suit karta haiâ, He smiled tilting his head.
Surprised, Anupamaâs fingers flew to her spects and she removed them while Anuj bit out a small laugh.
âVeseâŚaap yahan kese?â She asked.
Anuj straightened his coat then.He always felt conscious around her. Habits!
âActually, trustee hoon toh socha, I should at least have a look at the school and see if something else is neededâ.
Anupama nodded, âAchaâ and started to look around while Anuj adjusted his glasses and started looking around too, all the while thinking of something else to talk about.
âAapne aaj koi shayari nahi kari, ghalib kapadia jiâ It was anupama who broke the stalemate and Anuj turned to her, amused.
âKal tak jo mera khwab tha
Aaj main uska sach hoon,
Kal tak main jo gumnaam tha
Aaj uske liye shayar hoonâ.
While Anuj stifled a smile as Anupama mulled his words, Pakhi felt her mouth fall open.
He was not! He canât be! No! Itâs impossible!
Admitting defeat Anupama gave him a pointed look, âAb vo kya kehte haiâŚ.subtitleâŚhaan vo bhi de dijiyeâ.
It was Pakhiâs turn to stare at her mother. He had obviously done a shayari on her! And did he not say something about her being his dream?! But then it could have been a figure of speech.
âYahi ki ab main NRI businessman anuj kapadia se ghalib kapadia ho gaya hoon. Itâs an improvementâ.
âAcha!â Anupama chuckled at that and Anuj found himself staring, if he was not already.
And Pakhi had actually noticed him staring at her mother like she meant the world to him. She looked between the two dubious, her mother was clearly oblivious and Mr Anuj was veeery obvious!
âBut was he really interested in her mother? She used to be his crush but that was 26 years back!
âWell, it was nice meeting you both, ab main chalta hoon, aap logon ka bhi lunch time haiâ.
Anupama nodded and Anuj turned around to leave when Pakhi interrupted, âWhy donât you join us?â
âKya?â Both Anuj and anupama spoke simultaneously and Anuj smiled.
âNo, I donât want to disturb you guysâ, he replied while sneaking a glance at Anupama who was glaring her daughterâs way, who was so not caring.
âDisturbance kesi, lunch hi toh karna hai, do se bhale teen! Haina mummy?â Pakhi passed the ball to Anupama anda baffled Anupama looked at Anuj as he looked her way, waiting.
âYou donât have to force yourself Anupama. If you are uncomfortable, Iâll leaveâ Anuj spoke with a smile, while Pakhi saw the light dim from his eyes.
He seriously couldnât be!
âAisi koi baat nahin hainâAnupama replied then having seen his brilliant smile dip a notch. She had her guard up against him simply because of her ex-husbandâs taunts and baaâs displeasure at their acquaintance. It was wrong of her to do that when all Anuj had been was but a gentleman, the likes of whom she had never crossed paths with. She could not be doing with him what was done with her, rejection in exchange for friendship.
âMujhe bahot acha lagega agar aap hamare saath lunch karenge, Anujâ She offered with a smile and his face lit up.
And Pakhi gaped. She had been about to dismiss the notion of him having any lingering feelings for her mother, when something came to her.
âBas kisi ka intezar kar raha thaâ
He had been glancing at the staffroom from where her mother had walked out of. Interpretation, he was waiting for her. Not to mention, the lighthouse of a face he had all the while talking to her mother.
And her curiosity got the best of her. She just wanted to know. And so she will. Even though the truth was glaringly obvous.
So I know this is not too much of romance but the Anuj has barely started in the show and their dynamics are still to develop. So I decided to develop my story in the same direction. Hope you will enjoy. Till next time!
