Part 3
âPakhi, mummy wonât like this!â Kinjal complained as she looked at the piece of clothing pakhi was holding out.
Pakhi grinned as she folded it back. âUski chinta aap mat kijiye!â And saying that Pakhi rushed out.
âGod, iss ladki ko ab kya nayi aafat sujhi hai!â Kinjal shook her head as she went towards the bathroom.
It was Durga puja today. A very beautiful pandal was set up in the colony and everyone was participating, and so were the shahs.
âMummy, there you go!â Sweety stormed inside the room as Anupama was adjusting her saree.
âYe kya hai?â Anupama asked, as she took the bag and pulled out a very pretty off white saree with minimal red embroidery.
âDurga puja pandal main dalne ke liye dressâ, Sweety chimed in response.
Anupama shook her head in negative then, âBeta, main aise hi theek hoonâ.
Neither was Durga pooja a festival they usually celebrated, nor was she in a mood for dressing up. The continuous hustle between home, school and the dance classes had her drained to the max. It was not too late now, but she really wanted to retire for the day.She had decided to simply pay her respects at the pandal and be done with it.
âNo mummy! Please daal lo na!Please! Main itne pyaar se laai hu!â Pakhi pleaded, strangely desperate.
âBeta, Iâm really tired andâ
âHaa toh, zyada der mat rukna waha but please try this saree na!â Pakhi made a puppy face as Anupama finally gave in with a sigh.
Pakhi cheered as Anupama took the saree and went into the washroom. As the door opened 5 minutes later, Pakhi found her smile widening as her mummy looked absolutely angelic in the saree- red blouse, white overall and a red patterned fall. Perfect!
âSweety ye kya hai?!â Anupama complained as she turned her back towards the mirror. The blouse was all strings!
âMain help karti hu na mummy!âSweety volunteered as she started to tie the strings.
âHamari umra main ye sab acha nahi lagta!â Anupama replied as she looked at her back. Too exposed.
But before she could say or do anything, sweety pushed her to sit down and started arranging her hair into a bun. Before long, sweety was done with her work and took a step back as she admired her mother.
âWow mummy! Aaj toh vo flat ho jaenge!â
âKaun?â Anupama asked as pakhi bit her tongue and clarified, âAaj toh humâŚlateâŚlate ho jaenge!â
Anu shook her head at her daughter and then looked herself in the mirror. She looked sharp and bold. Then her gaze flitted to her back, exposed all the way to her lower waist. Too bold!
Quickly she pulled the fall over to the other side of her waist and held it tightly. With the view of her back obscured, Anupama finally felt a little decent while Pakhi whined, â Mummy!!â
âBahot hua tera! Ab jaldi se taiyar ho jake!"
Pakhi made a face as she grumbled a fine and walked away. Anu only shook her head at her antiques.
Durga Pooja Pandal
While the Shah family entered the Pandal, Pakhi kept on looking around the space.
âKise dhoondh rahi haiâ, Samar asked as his sister jumped a little and poked out her tongue at him. âKisiko nahi!â
.
.
âDamn, I hope we are not too late!â
âHaa toh tera shringaar kaha khatm ho raha tha!â
âShringar?! What, shringar! Dhoti bandhna is tough, GK!â
âTime dhoti bandhne main laga ya ye ghosla set karne main!â GK pointed out as he tried to pull at Anujâs hair but he flinched away quickly, his palm flying to set his hairs again.
âToh, should I not even look presentable?â Anuj complained as he looked at his watch.
âPresentable?â GK smirked before continuing, âTut toh poora Present lag raha hai, vo bhi Made for Anupama!â
âGK!â Anuj rolled his eyes as they entered the pandal.
âGhoor kya raha hai! Iâm saying the truth. Dulha bhi tujhse kam time leta hoga ready hone main!â GK remarked as Anuj did another eyeroll, âAs if!â
Pakhi who had been looking around, squealed in excitement as she saw Anuj come into her view.
âHe is here, yes!!â Quickly, she rushed towards him while the shahs were greeting another neighborhood family.
âHi, wish you a Happy Durga Puja!âAnuj stopped in his path as Pakhi rushed up to him.
âHappy Durga puja to you too!â He wished her back with a smile as his eyes wandered behind her in eagerness.
âKise dhoondh rahe hain?â Pakhi asked, clearly aware of the answer this time. Anuj pulled at his bandhgala on being caught and nodded in negative, âKisi ko nahi! I was justâŚlooking around the pandal. Itâs beautifully done!â
Pakhi snickered at his obvious lie as she lead the way for him. âBy the way, thank you for comingâ
âNo, I should be the one thanking you. Thank you for extending us the invitationâ
Pakhi nodded in response and soon they spotted the shah family, who were by now gathered in a group.
Baa made a face as she saw the duo but what could she do. Pakhi had recommended inviting the two and her husband had gladly taken up the offer.
While Anuj and GK were greeting the shahs, Anupama who had been away from the scene walked in and Anuj who was about to reply to Kavyaâs hi, paused midway. Because the view in front of him was mesmerizing. Anuj stared unabashed as Anupama smiled at him.
To him, she looked absolutely breathtaking in that moment. A serene white paired with contrasting loud red,the big red bindi, the dark kohled eyes and the supple red li..
âAhmm!â As GK cleared his throat,Anuj came to his senses and realized his thoughts had taken a rather inappropriate turn. His eyes strayed to her lips once again before he looked away, his throat bobbing.
âBad Anuj! Maaf karna, Durga maa!â
Amusement would be an understatement because Pakhi had been observing Anuj with much interest and was not disappointed by his reaction one bit. Also the man was handsome, no doubt. He was garnering much attention from the women around her, some much younger, some much happening and yet the only woman, he was staring at was her mummy.
âHe is soâŚwhipped!â
âHey!â Anuj finally greeted her and she greeted him too. âJai shri Krishna!â
âAchi lag rahi hoâ, And the next second, a compliment slipped out of his mouth before he could stop it. She looked at him surprised and he looked away, smoothening the creases of his kurta, âP-pakhi tum bahot achi lag rahi ho!â
It was a very poor attempt at diversion as Pakhi chuckled.
âAap bhi ache lag rahe hain. YeâŚdhoti jach rahi hai aap parâ, It was Anujâs turn to be surprised as Anupama complimented him.
Shayar kapaia truly was unique. He never talked straight, and in the rare instances he did, he would get embarrassed very easily. Like right now, she could spot the slight red dusting his cheeks.
Anupama chuckled as he furrowed his brows, âWhy are you laughing?â
âBecause you are blushing!â It was Pakhiâs turn to butt in as Anuj touched his cheeks as if the touch would convey to him the redness of his face. However his action led to both Anupama and Pakhi bursting into chuckles, and Anuj felt the heat rising to his ears. He didnât know if he wanted the ground to swallow him or just keep on listening to the music of her laughter.
As the shankh was blown, Anupama signalled them to move as everyone started to move towards the goddessâs idol. In that moment, as Anupamaâs phone slipped from her hands, she let go of the pallu she was holding and leaned down. Anuj, who was right behind her sucked in a deep breath as he saw her back. All strings!
Damn!â
Anuj quickly turned his face away, looking around to check if anyone was watching. The instant he turned back, Anupama straightened up and Anuj felt desire shoot through him, the likes of which he had never experienced. Appalled by his thoughts, on such a pious day at that, he covered his face with his fingers and looked away again.
âThis is wrong! Get your head straight!â
A shiver travelled down Anuâs spine and she quickly pulled the fall over her shoulder on realizing that it had slipped her hold.
Pakhi had been walking two paces behind the two, simply to keep an eye on how well her plan was working. Up till this point, she was having fun at the expense of Anujâs unease and the affection brimming in his eyes. But the look that had passed his eyes in that instant had forced her to turn away quickly. She still was an innocent child, was what she was forced to admit when he was making âthoseâ eyes at mummy. Not to mention it was her mummy!
âKya soch rahi hai?â Samar whispered as he saw pakhi deep in thought.
âBedroom eyesâ, she replied as samar leaned back with a scandalous look.
Pakhi flushed red as she realized her tongue slip and scurried away like a mouse, while samar continue to stare at her retreating form.
âPata nahi ye aaj kal konsi novel padh rahi haiâ, Samar shook his head as he proceeded towards where others had already gathered for the aarti.
Once the aarti was done, turn by turn people started to go forward to do the aarti. And soon it was Anupamaâs turn. But as Kavya passed the aarti to her, while taking the pallu on her head with her left, anupamaâs hold on the lamp loosened and she fumbled as it almost slipped from her grasp.
Almost.
Anuj who was standing right behind her was quick on his feet, as he rushed forward and quickly clasped her hand holding the lamp, in his own. While his fingers intertwined with hers, their gazes clashed and as if indicating a miracle a strong gale of wind blew then, as the the chunari that was decorating mataâs head flew and fell down on Anu and Anujâs heads.
Pakhi gaped at the scene in pleasant shock. God itself was sending out signs for these too. Gosh!
Everyone else was just as shocked, while Anuj and Anu stared at the blessing covering their heads and then looked at each other. While GK smiled pleased. They were meant to be!
Note - Pardon me for my lack of knowledge and thereoff regarding Durga puja. I wrote just enough to make the scene.
