CRISTIANO RONALDO blew Manchester United's big chance to put one foot in the Champions League final.
The Red Devils ace crashed his early penalty against the post at the Nou Camp.
And the miss could prove costly as United were held to a goalless draw in the semi-final first leg ahead of Tuesday's rematch at Old Trafford.
United were hit by a blow leading up to kick-off when Nemanja Vidic pulled out after being rushed to hospital with a stomach complaint.
And they then squandered a great chance to take the lead after just three minutes when Gabriel Milito handled inside the penalty area.
Ronaldo stepped up for his 39th goal of the season but sidefooted his effort against the outside of the post to the delight of the home fans.
After the initial threat, Barca cranked up the pressure on United and dominated the opening half.
Yet, Ronaldo felt he should have had a second penalty in the 30th minute when he was bundled over by Rafael Marquez but referee Massimo Busacca waved it away.
Samuel Eto'o rattled in a shot after 34 minutes but Wes Brown made a vital block.
United keeper Edwin van der Sar did well to tip over Gianluca Zambrotta's shot at the start of the second half.
Eto'o then sent his effort into the side-netting, while Deco tested Van der Sar with a low drive.
Xavi was next to try his luck from 20 yards but the Red Devils No1 was again equal to the effort.
Barcelona continued to be frustrated as they desperately attempted to break the deadlock.
Substitute Thierry Henry went close with two long-range strikes late on but United held on for the draw.
Old Trafford will be rocking in just six days.
