Part 4 (last)

Keerti was deep in though when Raghav walked in with a cup of coffee. It had been a while they bonded over a cup of coffee. He saw her look out of the window, lost and completely unaware of his presence. His heart broke for his sister. She deserved a better childhood and she deserved true love, unlike Sunny who was only with her for his money. Raghav snapped his fingers, bringing Keerti back from the world of her thoughts. Raghav always knew that she liked living in her head and often wondered how the world in her mind looked like; not like this definitely, he sadly smiled.

"Bhai, coffee? It's late and why are you still awake", she brought on all the questions.

"Woah, slow down mere cheetah!!", he spoke as he plopped himself down beside her, handing her the hot cup of coffee.

"Now tell, me, what's keeping you awake Keerti", he asked carefully, knowing very well that she was already passing through a rough patch of her life. Her career was stagnant, the love of her life was turning out to be a vile man and life seemed to be on a standstill for her. Her eyes never failed to mirror her thoughts and Raghav could always read whatever was seeded deep in her heart.

"You know bhai", she started of slow, "I always wanted a simple life, a simple family and a loving husband. When I met Sunny, he was a struggling artist and he seemed to be so genuine with his work, I don't know when or how I fell in love with him. He never bothered about money, his art mattered to him over money. Over time, I feel that he has changed. His love has changed, but I kept on ignoring all the warning bells out of fear of losing him.......I am scared. What if it's really your money he is after? You know, I've been paying his bills for the past two years...." she paused to look at Raghav who was listening to each word intently and at the same time, feeling sorry for his sister to have fallen for a toxic man like Sunny.

"Why are you scared Keerti? Is it about the plan or the fact that it may prove him to be the wrong person for you?' asked Raghav, holding her by the shoulders. Keerti was on the verge of tears and hugged her brother, sobbing her heart out. At times like this, one can only wait until the tears dry up. Watching your loved one cry their heart out and not being able to do anything hits the heart like shreds of a broken glass. Raghav consoled her to his best ability, he was emotionally comfortable consoling people, his inhibitions of being shaken off often stopping him right in his tracks. But this time, he made the effort, for his sister. He owed her this.

"I am afraid that he may turn out to be he wrong man for me, bhai. Five years of togetherness and this is how it will end", Keerti gave Raghav a helpless look.

"Keerti, you need not cry for that man, but I will not stop you. Cry, my dear sister. Because once the tears dry and the fog clears, the answer to only one question will erase all your doubts and fears and you will walk out with your head held high", assured Raghav, speaking in a fatherly tone.

"What is that question, Raghav?', she asked, wiping away her tears.

"Ask yourself this: Can you ever love a man who supports a murderer, and not just any murderer but a man who tries to kill his own mother, do you see him as a father to your children", Raghav was sure that his sister would never want a man like him to be the father to her children. A girl always looks for her fathers qualities in her husband and Sunny was nothing like their Nana.

Raghav and Keerti sat in silence, the air thick with tension. The recent found camaraderie was proving to be awkward, after years of silent loathing and drowning in guilt, along with a sense of satisfaction for a misplaced vengeance. Both Keerti and Raghav seemed to walk on eggshells each time they interacted and the awkwardness was not going to dissipate just yet. Keerti took note of the fact that Raghav still felt guilty of whatever transpired in the past and a sudden realization hit her. She hadn't told him that she already forgave him a while back, specifically when he stood up to protect her honor during the shameful MMS fiasco.

Raghav got up to leave when Keerti stopped him. This had to be done, it was now or never, she thought.

"Thank you bhai", she spoke softly, holding his hands. Raghav was slightly taken aback, the affection was probably unexpected and he was used to living a lonely life. Every new emotion in his life shook him up, but he knew better to never display his fears.

"Bhai, I already forgave you a long time ago...You don't have to feel burdened, you know that right", she assured him, all the while holding his hands.

"What are you talking about, Keerti?", Raghav asked, yet deep in his heart, he knew what this was about but his senses could not draw out any semblance of this sentence. He had learnt to stop expecting any form of forgiveness from her, even after their recent reconciliation.

"You know what I'm talking about bhai. You did not kill Nana and Arjun", she spoke firmly, meaning each word she spoke. Raghav's heart could not gather all the emotions he felt and he could not control the involuntary tears that trailed off his cheeks.

"You need to sleep bhai, good night", and with that, Keerti left his hands, allowing Raghav to recede to his room and cry his heart out. She was aware that he could not break down in her presence, after all, he had to maintain his image as the head of family. How she wished that Pallavi was with him right now, she could him and more importantly, she knew that he felt extremely safe in Pallavi's presence and would not hold himself back.

Raghav quickly walked to his room and shut the door, silencing his anguished cries and bouts of laughter from relief.

***********

Mandar woke up to a hot morning. He finally slept well after eight days of torture and retribution. He wondered why he had to suffer, when all he ever wanted was Pallavi. After all, everything was fair in love and war. He knew that he was not losing his mind and the calls must be fake. He had decided to rope in Sunny, after all Sunny seemed to be a person with high IT skills, he may find out who was behind these calls. He met Sunny and narrated the entire situation, including his confession about Devyani. Little did he know that Sunny's house was already bugged. Raghav was not a namesake Don. If he wanted, he could bug the entire city!

"Mandar, you're crazy!! There are no calls, look!", Sunny showed Mandar the call history. Mandar was sure that he did not erase the call history because all other calls he made appeared on the list, apart from the calls from those different numbers.

"Sunny, you have to help me, get this phone checked by an expert", spoke Mandar, fidgeting with his fingers and tapping his feet nervously.

"Okay, I will. Give me the cash. These services are expensive!", Sunny was straightforward when it came to money. He would never loan out any form of money even to his loved ones. The recent gift he bought for Keerti cost him an arm and a leg, and he hated himself for spending so much on a girl!

"I don't have that much cash, why can't you help me out?", requested Mandar.

"Bro, chill. I don't have any money. I use Keerti's money, that stupid girl!", laughed Sunny, making a mental note of how silly Keerti was to buy in his lies.

Raghav was seething in anger at the mention of his sister in such a distasteful tone. If only he could beat him to pulp! But he knew better. Let the mix of technology and brain power be the end of these morons who think they can stand before him. Sometimes, arrogance was a blessing, Raghav smirked.

"Stupid girl? Don't you love her?" Mandar asked, confused at the turn of events.

"Love? Only stupid people fall in love. She is just my means to an end. Don't ask me more question, okay? And get yourself checked. You seem to be slightly off these days, alright?" Sunny trailed away.

Mandar was completely helpless. No cash, no contacts and no job in sight. This situation made him angry and he wished day and night to have Raghav's power and stature. God was not fair to grant his wishes to an undeserving man, he often thought. He walked home, lost in thought and as a last resort, he decided to switch off his phone and take some pills to sleep.

It really seemed to him that all the calls were just a fragment of his imagination. He recalls having imaginary friends as a child and he would talk to them for hours. He had grown out of that habit but it was possible that he had started imagining them again under immense stress and loneliness. His day was well, no phone calls the entire day and he could look at Pallavi without the feeling of fear. She was beautiful, she was his. Pallavi smiled at him as she served him breakfast and sat down across him to have her food. The family was chit chatting as usual, from gossip to what was new in Bollywood, every conversation crossed their discussions over breakfast. Pallavi was chirpy as usual, speaking of her favorite designers and the jewelry she would like to wear on their wedding. Mandar was feeling embarrassed for he could not afford any of the items that she wanted. Lost in his thoughts, he did not notice when Pallavi asked him a question.

"Mandar!", Pallavi snapped her fingers right in front of his eyes, spilling his hot tea on his pants. Mandar was infuriated, the hot liquid burning his thighs. He almost lashed out at Pallavi but stopped right in his tracks as he saw all eyes on him. He could not let himself carried away by anger, especially after Pallavi agreed to marry him.

"Oh, I am so sorry, did that hurt, Mandar?", she asked, oh so sweetly. One would almost imagine that she was in love with this man sitting right across her but only her heart knew how much she loathed him. She was thrilled that she was widowed, because the thought of spending time with this man was so distasteful, let alone sharing a bed with him. Pallavi's thoughts lingered on the word bed and flashes of Raghav floated around her eyes, remembering his sweet sleeping face and how she loved to watch him wake up, almost like a grudging child. If it wasn't for Mandars "death", fate would never have led her to Raghav. If fate was always this painful and twisted, but it led to Raghav, she did not minding walking along that road a thousand times.

Mandar quickly responded in a no and walked back to his room for a change of clothes. He was glad the phone was off, at least it gave him some peace. Mandar opened his wardrobe and fished for his favorite brown pants in the pile of unfolded clothes. He really needed a wife to help him get organized, he mused internally. Just as he was about to leave the room, he heard his phone ring, but this time it wasn't his cell but the landline. His desperation could clearly be seen on his phone as sweat beads appeared on his forehead and his hands started shaking involuntarily. He was hesitant to answer the call but he was curious to find out if he was really imagining those people or if this was real.

"Hello?", whispered Mandar after a long pause.

"Hello, Mandar?", spoke the other person. It was a woman. Mandar was relieved. Those phone calls were a fragment of his imagination.

"Yes, who is this?", he spoke confidently.

"It's Devyani. Mandar gave me your contact. He knows what you did and what you're going to do", spoke the other person in a chilling tone. Mandar almost wet his pants. He was sure Devyani was dead. Dead people don't talk.

"Oh yes, they do!", spoke Devyani, in her usual chilling tone. Mandar's legs felt like jelly. How did Devyani know what he was thinking?

"Shut up! You're not real! You know nothing about what I will do", Mandar screamed into the speaker, giving no regard to whether or not his voice could be heard outside the room.

"Yes, I can. I can even tell you what will happen next. Pallavi will walk in with a burns cream for you", she said sending Mandar into a hysterical state. He sat on the bed, shaking uncontrollably, hoping against hope that this was one of his numerous nightmares about Devyani. He hoped the nightmare would end soon, waiting to wake up. But nothing of that sort happened and in less than a minute, Pallavi walked in. With a burns cream. His field of vision was getting darker, his sense of speech left him and before Pallavi could ask him what was wrong, he passed out.

Pallavi was smiling. How she wished to slap an unconscious Mandar, how would he ever know? But she thought against it as she did not want to touch his sinful face with her hands. The time to put up an act was here and with that, she screamed her head off, gathering all the family members in his bedroom. The scampered into his room, stressed about his condition, thus calling a doctor.

**********************

Pallavi glided out of his room and quickly went to her room to call Raghav.

"Hey! I see that my wife is a really sly woman", winked Raghav. Pallavi was happy, to see him and at their success.

'I am learning from the best, you know that", she teased him, which made Raghav extremely elated. It was an honor to be called sly by his wife, and in that tone, he'd wish to hear it on repeat.

"But tell me, how did you get Devyani's voice?", she curiously inquired. She was aware that Raghav had already sent a private team to fish out information about Devyani and the circumstances of her death, but she didn't figure out the part of the voice.

"Ever heard of Deepfakes?", Raghav asked, raising his eyebrow.

"No...", she trailed off.

"Remember I asked you for one of your videos together where her voice was clear?", explained Raghav and Pallavi nodded in a yes, Of course she remembered. She had to ask her brother go send her hard drive all the way from Kolhapur and spent an entire night looking for their videos together. She missed her friend and loathed Mandar for doing what he did.

"So, my dear wife, google deepfakes and you'll know how it works. We just didn't go all the way with it, but if need be, trust me, your husband can do a lot more...", the conversation seemed to be taking a different turn altogether. It seemed that Raghav's flirting button was switched on, again! This man has no sense of timing, thought Pallavi, yet smiling at his impish behavior.

"Raghav, do you have to flirt all the time", she laughed and his response "angered' Pallavi.

'Do you want me to flirt with the neighbors wife then, wifey?", Raghav chided her, earning himself a sulking Pallavi. "Okay, don't be sad. I will not do that!", he cajoled her. She loved how he always cajoled her.

"I have to go, they'll get suspicious", and with that and a few sweet virtual kisses, they disconnected the call.

*********

The two weeks before Keerti and Sunny's wedding was fast approaching and the confession of Aai was not yet accomplished. Pallavi was a bit weary and Raghav was slightly tensed, but nothing that he could not handle. The wedding did not bother Raghav but it would disfigure the plan as Mandar would be confident about the fact that Raghav would have a meltdown and Raghav was in no mood to act it out, not that he couldn't but he just did not want to see any form of a smile on Mandar's face. Raghav called Farhad into his Den.

"Farhad, is the final leg of our plan ready? I need that system in place before 8 pm today". he spoke with urgency.

"Anna, it's ready. I just tested the product and it works like a miracle, At night, Mandar will not know what hit him. Let's do it Anna" and the two brothers hugged each other. Raghav always thanked God silently for sending one of his angels in the form of Farhad. If he had to, he would even die for Farhad. Only he knew how Farhad always held his back in the most desperate times. Those were the days when neither Amma nor Pallavi were by his side. He was along, sinking in his hell hole when Farhad pulled him out of it like an anchor.

Farhad and Raghav walked out of their den and headed for Deshmukh Nivas. It was time to unfold the truth to everyone. Pallavi was getting nervous but Amruta reassured her. Pallavi often looked at her young and silly sister. Her heart ached for Amruta, she did not deserve all the humiliation she received during her abortion fiasco. After all, she was always misled by her obnoxious mother.

It was around 9 pm when everyone started resigning to their rooms for a good slumber. Pallavi went to Aai's room and told her about their plan. Mandar was end game, in almost no time. Raghav and Farhad waited in Raghav's car parked a few meters away from Deshmukh Nivas. Midnight was still far, the wait was long but it should be worth it. Till then, the two brothers played "antakshri" and Farhad was beating Raghav at it! It surely seemed that Raghav had no string of music in his veins while Farhad sang like he was going to win the next Indian Idol. Raghav carried his mini chess with him so that they could sharpen their brains while they waited for midnight. Chess was his favorite game, even as a kid. He took pride in being a state champion once upon a time, until all hell broke lose.

Mandar was sleeping, not so peacefully, as the ghosts of Devyani haunted him. To top it all, the voice in his head called Mandar laughed at his predicament, often taunting him that switching off the cell phone does not help because Mandar lives on. Forever, like it or not. He was tossing and turning in bed when he heard a voice near the back door of his room. It was Aai. How was it even possible for her to be here? She was bed ridden. Mandar's panic led him to follow the source of her voice which surprisingly led him to the terrace. "I will have to throw her again if she is walking! She can't live, not anymore", he muttered out of fear and anxiety.

Mandar walked into the terrace and found his Aai standing at the exact spot from where he pushed her. This was unreal. He looked around to see if he was alone. He pinched himself to find out if he was dreaming. None. It was all real. How could Aai be standing and where the hell is Pallavi? Mandar was beyond confused and the voices in his head would not stop laughing at him. Devyani kept on speaking to him about how painful it felt dying such a gruesome death, while Mandar kept on laughing at him for being the biggest loser in this world.

"Aai? How did you get here!" Mandar asked, stealthily approaching her. She looked on, with a piercing gaze which made Mandar feel like a criminal. He knew he was no criminal, only if Aai could understand his love for Pallavi. Love makes people go beyond right and wrong, only if she understood.

"Aai, I am asking you again, what are you doing here!!", bellowed Mandar. No response from Aai.

Mandar walked up to her and spoke to her in an intimidating tone.

"If you tell Pallavi anything, I swear I will push you one more time and this time, I will make sure you die, do you hear me, my lovely Aai?" he screamed. He was getting agitated to have her look on, with her constant expression of rebuke and mockery. As if she was happy to see him in this condition.

Mandar spoke one more time, this time, reaching out for her shoulders with the intention to push her. "Do you want me to push you again?", he laughed. It seemed that he was losing sense of his whereabouts, for he did not notice the entire family walking in and watching him utter those bewildering words. His laughter seemed like a man who has just lost his marbles, almost manic.

Just as he reached out for her shoulders, he fell and the lights were switched on and there was chaos everywhere. Vijay Deshmukh was holding his head as Milind Kaka looked devastated. Sulochna, Amruta and Mansi were crying. Aai? Where was she? She was just standing here. And Pallavi, where was Pallavi? He started looking for Pallavi. Just then, Pallavi walked in with Raghav, Farhad and a bunch of policemen.

"Arrest him. You have his confession and I've already submitted all previous confessions to you. He is all yours. Do everything in your power to get the victims justice. I will file an FIR for each case", spoke Raghav with authority. This time, he made sure that he had the ACP on board. The ACP was an honest man and Raghav respected his authority. True that he was often corrupt and boasted about the Hyderabad police being under his thumb, but he knew the ACP was a genuine man and right now, he needed genuine people to look into this case.

Mandar was still looking for Aai, wondering if she was his imagination. He could no longer draw any clear demarcation between reality and imagination. He frantically went around each person to look for Aai. She was just here. He looked behind the policemen, who held him firmly. He screamed at Vijay Deskhmukh, he screamed at Raghav. He blamed everyone present for the disappearance of his Aai. He held Raghav by the collars, asking him to disclose what he's done with his Aai. Raghav felt the urge to reveal to Mandar that holograms often work magically, and it was not a big deal for him to design a simple one. The world has moved on to 7D holograms and Artificial Intelligence, this was just a tiny speck. However, Raghav chose to keep quiet and let Mandar wonder how it was all possible. Mandar went back to the spot where he saw his Aai just when Devyani's voice halted him in his tracks.

"Mandar, you're dying.....care to join me?" she laughed. He could not stop the laugher, it was ringing in his head like loud temple bells. Another voice taunted him yet again, this time it was Mandar. "Can I call you again, Mandar? You've forgotten me", He could no longer bear the pressure and he fell on the ground, pulling his legs to his chest and covering his ears with his hands, hoping to get rid of the voices. But the voices got louder, sending out an excruciating scream from Mandar. Everyone around him was stupefied, including Raghav and Pallavi. They knew that the would get the confessions but they were not aware that this man would lose his mind completely, that was not part of the plan. Everything was designed in a way that would lead to his confession and ultimate arrest, but fate is often twisted. Before the courts could do justice, God delivered his verdict. Mandar was guilty and he will suffer for his sins for the rest of his life.

Pallavi felt sorry, not for Mandar, but for the family. They did not deserve any of this. Mandar's pitiful state was breaking Vijay and his sisters, after all, they had once loved this man with all their hearts. Sulochna and Kaka were sitting, shedding silent tears. Farhad was by Amruta, trying to console her. She was his favorite sister, his little one, as he always called her.

The policemen went to where Mandar lay in pain and lifted him so that they could arrest him. Mandar looked up at them and started laughing. He asked one of the policemen if he could hear Mandar calling Mandar. The policemen took pity, but yet handcuffed him, leading him out of the house. All the way, Mandar kept on chanting "Mandar calling Mandar". It seemed that it was all he could say.

Mandar calling Mandar.

Mandar calling Mandar.

This was all he could say in the court after a few months where he was declared insane. All the evidence led against him. Raghav put his best lawyer forward to fight for the victims and Mandar was assigned a state lawyer, for his family disowned him. The judge delivered his verdict. Mandar was to spend his remaining life in confinement, under strict guard and continuous observation of psychiatrists. His confinement area was white. Pristine white and silent. Mandar would often pull out his hair each time he heard the voices in his head. The silence was driving him crazy. It's not called deafening silence out of no reason.

One would wonder what happened to Keerti and Sunny. Well, Sunny almost wet his pants after he realized the power Raghav Rao held in this city. The arrest of Mandar got him thinking again. He could not risk messing with Keerti, it was too dangerous. Raghav was dangerous. He no longer wanted his money. He wanted out. Therefore, after Mandars arrest, Sunny soon broke up with Keerti, citing the silliest of reasons. She had already heard everything he said about her and was just playing along, wanting Sunny to crack. Keerti pretended to be hurt but as soon as Sunny was out, she laughed her heart out, she was just with him to watch him whimper like a wet cat. If she had one regret, it was that of falling in love with such a vile man. Mistake happen, next time she will do better! She walked out of Sunny's house with an aura only Raghav Rao possessed. After all, she was a Rao!!

A few months later:-

"Raghav, how much did the hologram, bots, bugs and all that technology cost you", asked Pallavi. She was curious and Farhad would never give out the numbers. Raghav wanted to keep money matters out of her life. She only deserved to smile and speaking of large sums of money would make her frown. He knew that his wife still had a middle class heart.

"Why bother sweetheart?", he said, pulling her to sit on his lap.

"Tell me, please?", pouted Pallavi, but she was not going to win this one. Raghav placed a peck on her lips and refused.

"No",

Pallavi sighed. She was sure it cost an arm and a leg. Her rough guess was probably twenty thousand dollars. If only she knew that it was close to five times her guess, of course this included professional charges and legal fees. Raghav had to cover his tracks and protect his rich ass against legal action.

"Well, what I can I say baby, the power of money!", he spoke softly, stroking her cheeks. Pallavi always blushed, damn this man, she thought.

"And the power of brains", she said while tapping her brains.

"And the power of brains", Raghav immediately shifted her fingers to his head, earning him a slight slap on his arms.

What they did not know was that Farhad was just sitting in the living room, watching the two lovebirds carry on with their teenage romance as if no one was looking. He was now getting accustomed to all this, and also picking a few tips from Anna. He came to realize that Anna may not have watched many films, but his Anna had a romantic streak in him!

Farhad cleared his throat and spoke up.

"Not the power of money or brains, but the power of truth!"

This earned his a few hip hip hurrays and they all sang in unison, "AMEN TO THAT"!

Amma and Keerti laughed at the crackheads as they walked in with their shopping bags.

All's well that ends well.

END

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey everyone

This is really long 😆 I could not bother with Sunny. Who is he, again?

Also, for the curious ones out there, see below;-

Holograms work - read up on 7D holograms and how AI and VR is integrated to create this. I took the liberty of making it a bit simple in this story, and skipped the set up stage.

Bots almost rule the SM world

Bugging someone's house is nothing new

Deepfakes, unfortunately is real. Be careful what you see and hear these days. It could all be fake.

And lastly, psychological instability is real. A psychopath may lose his marbles, or he may not. It really depends. Mental health awareness is for such patients. Mandar is one of them. He needs a hospital. But he's also a criminal and his crimes can't be unseen.

Karma is also real.

Love is powerful.

The truth is all encompassing.

Satyamev Jayate!!

I hope I did justice to Raghav Rao. I wrote this only for Raghav Rao.

Best wishes,

Kiara

It’s really commendable to see you entwine the technologies with the story

Bots today not just run the SM but many more things for that matter

Hologram 7D is really into picture for quite a long time

In fact now AR and VR is available on android and ios as well.

Every technology used is so relatable in today’s world

Thank you Kiara for this really really intelligent story

Wowzers! 🥳👏 🥳

Boy, you did Raghav justice and how!?!

Brilliant concept! Something like this couldn't have been written on the fly and the way each chapter seamlessly transitioned to the next goes to show how well you drafted the entire story before putting it in words.

This is the Raghav Rao the show's currently missing. He's witty, sharp, and resourceful. He's also kind and compassionate where required, and equally ruthless where he deems fit. If I ever want someone to know about the Raghav I adore, I'd direct them to this piece. You've played out his character so, so, so well! Each dialogue, each action, it's as if he was doing 100 different things at once and didn't miss the mark on any of them!

Pallavi stood her ground rather well and Farhad's intelligence was finally given its fair share of screen time.

I applaud you for addressing Mandaar's mental health with such dichotomy. I was laughing along at his misery until the very end; that's when my heart went out to him. He's burdened by his crimes and while they cannot be forgiven, he needs help. In fact, he's been in grave need of help all along.

The power of YOUR brains has worked magic - I'll definitely be re-reading this multiple times! ❤️

I had such a vivid clear picture of Keerti & Raghav having their conversation near a big windowsill in the RR Mansion. I really want to see it😲

Acknowledgement to Farhad👏

The use of tech to get to criminals was sewn prettily in this chapter

And yes, you did justice to Raghav Rao👏

The RAOs finally got the ones in the end😎

I loved how you ended the story like a normal day😛

Kiara, there aren't enough words to appreciate this final part. It was fantastic. And real. The smart use of technology by smarty Rao's. I loved how you gave importance to all characters, including Kirti and Farhad. Mandar developing psychological issues as a result of his atrocities. Everything was bang on
