Aug 13 is Vyjayanthimala's birthday. Born in a conservative Tamil Brahmin family in Chennai, Vyjayanthi was encouraged in dance and music art forms by her family, but was primarily raised by her grandmother, Yadugiri Devi. At the age of 5, she performed before the Pope at Vatican City.

A dancer par excellence, her highly cultured family values stayed with her all her life, and to this day she remains a strict vegetarian and a devout Vaishnavite.

She made her debut in Films with the Tamil film Vazzhkai at the age of 16, but her first Hindi film was Bahar in 1951, which had the famous, 'Saiyyan dil mein aana re'. Then came the certified hit, Nagin in 1954 and Vyjayanthimala had arrived.

Known as an exemplary danseuse, she was far ahead of her peers in terms of her consummate dancing skills. In fact, the more elaborate dance numbers in Hindi films those days used to be picturized on her or on the Travancore sisters, Padmini and Ragini. Otherwise, they were all specialized 'item' numbers on 'item dancers. She was a trained Bharatanatyam dancer but her dancing skills went beyond this. Watch her do the Bhangra in 'Tum sang preet lagayi rasiya'. I can watch her dance for hours!

Not just dancing, but her acting skills were formidable too. As early as 1955, she was nominated and won the Filmfare award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Chandramukhi in Bimal Roy's Devdas, which she famously refused citing cleverly that Suchitra Sen (who played Paro) deserved it. This was an underhanded jibe to indicate that she thought Chandramukhi was a lead role and not a supporting role and she may well have been correct!

Later, she went on to star as lead in many commercially successful films such as New Delhi, Aasha, Naya Daur and Madhumati. Her pairing with Dilip Kumar was extremely successful and media began to link them romantically. But the real controversy in her life arose with Raj Kapoor's Sangam, where it was reported that RK pursued her relentlessly. She denies it to date, stating that it was all media created, but their affair is still talked about to this day, and RK's family, I think -Rishi Kapoor has talked openly in his book about how it affected his mother and their family.

She ended up marrying RK's physician, Dr. Bali and thereafter steered clear of controversies.

Her magnum opus, Amrapali was one she had pinned her hopes on, and was said to have been devastated when it failed at the box office.

She had a brief stint in the Parliament, but now mostly lives a quiet, reclusive life in Chennai. She recently spoke about her colleague, Dilip Kumar's death. Being a South Indian, she had to work hard to speak in an Awadhi accent for Gunga Jamuna but she did a brilliant job as Dhanno.

I have many favorite songs by Vyjayanthimala, the ones I will post are the ones that stand out because of her dances. She was extremely expressive in her acting, and I'm sure her background with dance helped.

What are your favorite Vyjayanthimala songs and/or dances?

The very mention of her name casts a spell over us to this day. Vyjayanthimala, an artiste who reigned over the world of dance and cinema for decades, carving a niche for herself in the tinsel town as much as in the classical dance circuit. There is something so unique about her name that it conjures up an image of a ravishing dancer-actor even among the present generation who never got to see her movies. Her charm carried her through generations by sheer word of mouth.

Few know her as a politician, an ardent golfer and a musician. Her autobiography "Bonding" has it all.

"Devdas" transformed her image as a dancing doll. Bimal Roy explored her full potential as an actress in the role of Chandramukhi, a dancing girl who gives up her profession to serve the man she loves. This change of character also ironically changed the perception of her Hindi directors and producers. She never found acting as a challenge because as a dancer there is so much of abhinaya to fulfil. The very word Natyam means dance, song and drama. From Devdas there was no looking back. She played a variety of roles each of which had an etched character that remained in audience memory for years to come unlike the present day movie roles. Every film was a showcased art piece, rather than an income-generating vocation.

My fav songs are many , but see this ----

When some journalist asked her ---What is your most memorable performance? Her reply ----

There was this Tamil film "Vanzikottai Valiban" where Padmini ("Jis Desh Mey Ganga Behti Hai") and me had a dance competition where one of us had to emerge the winner. It was a jugalbandi. We moved forward together in pure dance, either of us not willing to give in to the other. We forgot that we were acting in a movie and went on totally involved with our dance. None on the sets were able to figure out which of us excelled the other and finally the there is a fall of a chandelier and we stop with the words – sariana potti (equal competence). Much later Padmini got on to the stage in the US where I was dancing and mentioned this incident to the audience praising me to the skies while I snatched the mike from her hands and told them that she was no less a Bharatanatyam maestro who was mesmerising. I don’t think we both could have repeated that animated performance for the same movie if we were stopped an asked to do it the next day. It was a one-only of its kind.

You were a Congress MP. Was politics one of your arenas?

Politics like films also happened by accident. Once Rajiv Gandhi had come to Chennai and Dr. Bali, my husband, and me met him since I knew the family from Panditji’s times. He suddenly asked me to contest and I was flabbergasted. It was my husband’s prodding that pushed me to file my papers and that’s when the real fever began. I won with a thumping majority against my opponent who was no less a man in that area. Like my dance, I gave my best to my constituency – my sincerity, my work and dedication, proving my critics wrong. But I had no inclination to continue. Now I’m happy that I’ve established a dance research institute where I have documented and performed some of the rare Tanjore Quartet compositions, made a ragam, tanam, pallavi dance which is the sine-quo-non of a sabha concert in music and also some solo thematic presentations like Sita Visleshatrayam (thrice separated Sita) and such others. I’ve been a celebrity, successful in life but never allowed my other professions to overshadow my dance. Dance is and will always be my yoga, my meditation, my spiritual path.-----

And this one from Prince where she and Helen perform 6 diff dance styles between them!

Vyjayanthimala does the Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Mohini Attam while Helen does the Jazz, the flamenco and the belly dance!
Look at how fabulously she improvises on her Kathak moves though I know as a trained Bharatanatyam dancer that can be quite challenging since the moves in kathak are more fluid and less rigid. She is fabulous! They both are. Poor Shammi looks completely out of place 😆
