I watched Imlie English exam episode earlier today.. In that she tells Adi that she is scared that people will laugh at her, mock her language, think she is anpad, gawar.. and she gives up taking in English till Adi encourages her. She is always thrown off and takes a step back when someone says it is the city way of doing things, unless she has to fight for someone. That is why she was made a fools before the principal by her classmates, T’s made a fool of her so many times too for fun. So today when Rupi and Pallavi said the party is in her honor she started worrying. Her blind trust in Didi made her go with what she did, even if she looked in the mirror, she might not have realized it is not appropriate. She is already uncomfortable, on top of it wearing an attire that is new to her, tripping in those heals and the tension of being the center of the party on top of it humiliation by Aparna and Adi’s colleagues…added all up to Imlie’s insecurity. She would be devastated seeing Malini’s dance with Adi. Adi had to really do something dhamakedaar to lift Imlie’s spirits. If he doesn’t realize what Imlie went thru today, it would be his biggest failure. How os he going to give her saath if he can’t see that she is in pain.
While I understand the backdrop of Imlie's fears and insecurity about city people mocking her village lingo/behavior, the execution today was still very poor.
Firstly, an Imlie who has NEVER been shown to wear a dress baring her legs in her life (even if the dress today was not a short one), that Imlie was literally walking out with a big SMILE in the party? Yeh ST aayi ki Imlie?😆.....so disconnect started right there for me.....just cuz they wanted to show Imlie's face falling when people started laughing at her, they showed her all relaxed initially and forgot to establish a basis for her wearing clothes she's never worn before? Saara focus bas heels ke discomfort pe even though the dress was a total new space for her too?
I get that she blindly trusted Didi and agreed to go along with a change in appearance as an effort to fit into Adi's world.....but even for that, they needed to show Imlie being more awkward about that kind of a dress for the first time....for a village girl who only wears suits/saris, it was a big shift and that needed to be addressed.
So many contrivances for this lame dress wala angle...Didi claiming to Imlie that girls her age don't wear saris.....lol toh kya Imlie ka bhoot was wearing saris in PD after her marriage? Just for contrivance, Imlie is shown to believe she can't wear saris now?
I agree that the dress was a nice one and ST looked pretty in it....but the makeup was still a huge disconnecting turn off to me cuz there was no Imlie identifying marker on her......those three dots on her chin are a minimum in any look.....even the time she wore Adi's clothes, she had that....but aaj it was like watching a stranger😆.....upar se they didn't even give her much Imlie-like things to do....she was just standing around crying helplessly waiting for people to lead her in and out of the party😕.....
*Edit: Oh my bad, I guess she did have the three dots on her chin....I could barely see them under the 10 layers of makeup she had on😆
