Why could Aishwaraya Rai not make it big in Hollywood?

I read that she gave up several opportunities, such as Hitched. Would she have been more successful had she put in more effort?

Have you watched Pink Panther, Mistress of Spices etc? You wouldn't ask this question had you watched!

Matlab kuch bhi.. 😆

She was the no.1 actress of the 2000s, there's no disputing that. She had the hits and the popularity. She ruled the roost despite the ill-treatment meted out to her by the Khans.

Known for beauty etc. is a matter of subjective opinion. But one cannot deny the sheer cultural impact she created in Bollywood and in South cinema.

OT, she couldn't make it big due to her own limitations: no nudity, no kissing scenes, sex scenes etc. She refused to shift base to LA and wanted to continue working out of Mumbai. She refused to give up Indian cinema and wanted to balance both. Result: It was a half-assed effort and obviously that didn't get results.

She had the likes of Will Smith and Brad Pitt dying to work with her and she let those opportunities pass. If she made even 10% of the effort of a Priyanka Chopra, she would definitely have been up there amongst the biggest crossover stars like Penelope Cruz.

She only did 5 English films. Out of them, Bride and Prejudice was successful, Provoked received critical acclaim, Pink Panther 2 was a moderate BO success. The other two got panned and were flops.

Having said that, she was the first Indian actor to have made waves globally, even if it was mostly for her beauty. She is the one to have made the maximum global impact with minimal efforts.

I think she gave more importance to Indian movies and didn't want to settle abroad.

More than movies, she chose her family over career.

PC is far more ambitions IMO, she is doing it all after her successful run in BW, writing books, opening a restaurant. I don't think she will ever stop, I often wonder that had she married an Indian guy, be it from any field.. it would have been hard for her unless he were extremely supportive.

@Bold: Absolutely! She had agreed to do Hancock with Will Smith after her wedding, but Teji Bachchan passed away and she thought she should support her husband and in-laws and not go away abroad for a year in their time of grief. The role was then lapped up by Charlize Theron.

Same with the way she took 5 years off from limelight after becoming a mother when other actresses weren't following this trend.

It's clear how she prioritized family over her career and it showed. I was pissed off with her for this reason a few years ago but kya karein, it's her life... she should do what she likes. Now that I am older, I am more understanding of her decisions.

Regarding PC, I don't know. She isn't doing any stellar work career wise. She did better work when she was working here. She hasn't produced any good work since Bajirao Mastani and that was six years ago. But yes, it's clear that her priorities are more towards "global domination," a phrase which she repeatedly utters, and not so much a family life.

Ash never had to hustle for anything in her life. Everything was always dropped into her lap without much effort. She was pretty so she was asked to model. She was already a known model when she decided to enter Miss India. A lot of girls even dropped out because it was already known she would be made to win. Pageants are just as corrupt as the film industry.

Then BW came calling and she immediately got roles with people like Mani Ratnam without having any acting credentials. Then she started dating one of the biggest stars. In her heyday, she used to be pretty arrogant and brag about how she doesn't ask for work and is always the first choice. She never networked or made any friends or worked to endear herself to anyone.

The break-up with Salman was probably the first time in her life where she faced any hardship. She didn't have good enough relationships for anyone to stand by her but it didn't matter. She had crossover movies offered to her so she tried that.

But HW is different. Her looks alone don't garner that much value. Her light skin and light eyes won't have people going crazy when they already have Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox types with similar features. It was before the diversity age and she doesn't fit the diversity quota either because she looks too white.

And no, HW wasn't offering her every big movie like her PR made it out to be. They created all these stories of Bond movies, lead roles opposite Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt wanting her (she was offered a supporting role in Troy which required nudity, not the lead), etc.

Then she found the Bachchans and she returned back to what was easy and where everyone would fawn over her. Not that I blame her. Better to be super A-list in India than one amongst thousands of others in HW.

Because Hollywood doesn’t hype green/Blue eyes because every other girl in west has such eyes, which Ash is famous for in BW.
