Tulu is completely different from Kannada. There are few words similar but other Kannadigas can't understand or speak tulu.

There are many other languages too like Kodava(spoken by people of Coorg) , Konkani, byaari( spoken by local muslims) ,Havyaka ( variant of Kannda spoken by a set of brahmins) Shivalli( tulu variant) , are bhaashe ( mix of kannada and tulu).
Ours is diverse state. Many cultures, many mother tongues but one state language ( kannada)
