Hi all - I an writing fiction in English which iinvolves an indian family. I am struggling with coming up how Indians say things colloquially such as

- Oh My God!

- Bless my soul!

- Good God!

- Good Heavens!

Also how do indians address their mothers, fathers, uncles, etc.

Is there a website which I can refer to for this type of knowledge?

People would use these terms in their mother tongue usually, like Hey Bhagwan, Hey Deva, etc.

Mothers' are referred as Maa, Mom, Mummy, Mata, Aai, Baa, Amma, etc. depending on their region, language...

Fathers' are referred as Papa, Baba, Dad, Pappa, Baba, Daaji, Pitaji, etc..

Uncles are referred depending on their relationship

Paternal uncle (father's brother) is Chacha or Kaka (Chachi n Kaki/Kaku Aunts)

Maternal uncle (mothers'brother) is Mama (Mami maternal aunt)

Paternal Aunt & her husband is Bua-Fufaji

Maternal Aunt & her husband is Mausi- Mausaji (sometimes called kaka)

Hope this helps. You can alternatively watch some Indian TV shows to know how these relationships work, there is a name for each relation. 😆 quite complicated but yeah.

Hi DelusionsofNeha -

That is extremely helpful!

Your suggestion of watching a few indian TV shows is also a good idea. I am in the UK so a little difficult to do this. Can you suggest a few on youtube that I could try?

Merci beaucoup!
