I don’t think anyone would have watched had they replaced him.

On one hand, I'm glad they ended the serial there- it, as you said, ensured the show didn't drag, and made it a bit of an iconic serial that has aged reasonably well with time. Unlike other SP shows, not that much of negativity/separation either.

On the other hand, Barun quitting and the fans making the show end was probably unfair to the rest of the cast, who would've probably been happy to continue and cash in as much as they could.
