People took more risks with hard-hitting plots, layered characters and depth of thoughts, and the audience accepted those shows and loved them. Female characters weren't just props for the males to romance or to be victim to kitchen politics but they were living, breathing human characters that made people pause and think. Somewhere down the line, something went really wrong which is why even in 2021, we are trying to be happy with whatever crumbs we get in the name of empowered and nuanced characters. One or two shows with novel storylines may get pulled off air because the audience will still have the alternatives but if pretty much everyone is making these, the audience will eventually learn to get used to them as well. The issue is, such experiments are high-stakes risks and in this race of TRPs and getting the right numbers for profits, no one wants to deviate from the sure-shot formula to success.

Bold 1- The class of folks watching those serials changed.

It was a MC/UMC/UC phenomenon then, but primarily a LC/LMC/MC audience base today.

Of course there are other variables, but this is pretty much the biggest one.

Bold 2- this is my pet peeve as well. I believe the TRP system to be a HEAVILY flawed one- some 2,000 meters for the city of Mumbai, which essentially makes 1 meter represent what 10,000 people watch. Change this, and I think you'll see more empowering content on ITV.

This reminds me of that Star plus show Dil Sambhal Ja Zara from a few years back. That was supposed to be an ITV adaptation of the Turkish show Aşk-i Memnu but had to be pulled off air because of low ratings. I didn't follow it but I assume it was bold by ITV standards so people couldn't handle it😳

Actually, there is a reason for having progressive shows in 90s. In 90s TV, cables were only available in rich Urban families, and these families could connect more with such shows. As India economy grew, TV reached each household, even remote villages. And then there was a vacuum where demand was high for the content which this new audience can connect to or watch but supply was less. Right then Ekta came and filled that vacuum. Since then it continued and others also followed.

Same for web content now. As the young audience was no more in the shows like ITV, they were moving to Netflix for foreign shows. So now there are a lot of Indian makers who came forward to make shows for this new audience on OTT platform.

I am not saying the larger audience will never accept progressive shows, its just too much of a risk. Everyone wants to follow tried and tested formula.

Generally people these days don’t even give tv shows a chance because they assume it to be trash.

Yes, theTRP system is actually trash 😆

There was a show based on ask I memnu? I’ didn’t know that. They made an adaption of Fatmagul as well, not sure how it fared in India.

👍🏼

I watched a few 90s shows recently and absolutely loved them.

If I recollect correctly EK herself had done good shows at the start of her career. Don't know why or how she landed up with this regressive meme-worthy content

I agree and hence the doubt. If they wanna change it, they have to do all at once. 2-3 good shows only make those shows vulnerable to getting pulled off air.

I watched the Amala show too that was adapted from Fatmagul. It was nice but I didn't keep up with IF or other news to know how it fared. Dil sambhal jaa started off nice but since the female characters weren't 'ideal' by any desi standards most people didn't take it well I suppose😆

I'm guilty of it as well.

My default setting

Sony- Will give it a go if the script looks good and casting is done well. My last four Sony shows have been Beyhadh/YUDKBH/S9MK and now IPZN.

Star- normally no (especially if it's a prime time show), but if it seems to be getting good reviews and appears promising, might give it a try. It's how I got into MHRW.

Colors- avoid at all costs 😆

Zee- 99% like Colors. KKB (Pranbir actually) a bit of an exception simply because I liked the male lead's characterisation, and I only got into it during lockdown.
