And I don't know how much this stands true but many single women keeps cat would've kept cat in past also and society called those independent woman a witch and thus cat came associated to witchcraft.

There is a very good documentary on it on Netflix.. I think its on YouTube too. - A century of murder. If you are interested in the subject, watch it. It's very well made.

Actually, IMO it was mostly fear (and also people's quest for vengeance if they wanted to get rid of someone) that caused it. When we look at the era - life was really harsh at the time. People were plagued with fear, illnesses, wars etc. Religion mostly for a lot of people was driven by fear rather than spirituality.

Even King James had written a book on it. (He was actually a scientific man supposedly and was skeptical at first- an accused woman (a midwife) was presented to him and she confessed, he wasn't convinced but she told him something that made him believe so. )
