Could probably put that down to the fact that people get more choosy and (somewhat) less flexible as they age.

If you're very young, you could probably adjust to anything, even mediocrity in a potential s/o 😛. When you're older and have seen the world a bit, you don't want a compromise- you'd like someone who ticks almost all the boxes, which obviously makes it a smaller pool to choose from. 😊
