Also, I would like to add a few things. Usually, when we discuss LGBTQ we miss out on Trans people. I've encountered a lot of transphobia around me.
I mean, honestly, almost all of us have seen people laughing at feminine boys around us. (note: feminine boys are valid. does not imply that they are trans as long as they identify as a man, they are one. there's no parameter to measure 'masculinity')
Although people don't need to fit into the gender they were born with. It's like, you are trapped inside a body that clearly contradicts how you feel inside. It's a constant war between your mind and your body.
They exist among us and usually, are made fun of for not fitting into gender roles.
I am listing down a few terms that will help all of us get a better understanding of transgenderism.
GENDER DYSPHORIA manifests itself when a child (or adult) has a gender identity that does not match their biological identity and typically says ‘I am’ not ‘I want to be’ the opposite gender.
GENDER IDENTITY has been described as an individual’s internal sense of self as being, male, female, or an identity between or outside these two categories (Wilchins 2002)
GENDER ROLES are what the culture thinks one should do with one’s life, such as qualities, mannerisms, duties, and cultural expectations, according to a specific gender (Bornstein 1998).
GENDER QUEER: either drawing on several gender positions or otherwise not identifying with any specific gender (nonbinary)
Non-binary people usually do not use he/she pronouns because they do not feel comfortable in any of them. Refer to them as 'they/them' unless specified otherwise.
E.g.: They went to school yesterday. (instead of he/she went to school)
CISGENDER: a person who identifies with their sex assigned at birth.
TRANSGENDER people are those whose gender identity or gender expression does not correspond to the gender they were assigned at birth.
TRANSSEXUAL refers to people who desire medical assistance (hormonal/surgical procedures) to transition from one sex to another.
TRANSPHOBIA can be defined as “emotional disgust toward individuals who do not conform to society’s gender expectations” characterized as an intense dislike or prejudice against Trans people.
