Amma

“Saree Ka Dukaan!”, Raghav’s voice reached Deshmukh Saree Emporium before he did.

“What is it? Also please don’t yell while entering the shop we may have customers who wouldn’t like it.”, Pallavi replied.

“Hmph, sorry but I need you for a very important task.”

“Let me decide, how important the task is and a please wouldn’t hurt anyone.”

“Okay, Saree Ka Dukaan please help me.”

Pallavi smiled, “Tell me your problem.”

“I need a Saree.”

“Ah, who is it for?,” asked Pallavi, pleased at being asked to do something that was her forte.

“My Amma.”

And then began a hunt for the best saree in the whole world.

“Nope.”

“I don’t like the colour.”

“The borders are bad.”

“I don’t like the material.

“What is this? All the sarees are terrible,”said Raghav as he rejected the 25th saree.

“Well maybe you’re the problem. These sarees are one of the best sarees I’ve ever seen. The handiwork is brilliant,” replied Pallavi annoyed.

“Wow, your customer service is pathetic as well.”

At this point Pallavi was on the verge of screaming and all Krishna wanted to do was leave the store.

“Krishna, go out and have a nice lunch break. Come back once I call you.”, Pallavi addressed Krishna while still glaring at Raghav.

“But didi..”

Pallavi turned back and nodded. That was all the confirmation Krishna needed. She hurried out of the store, relieved.

Meanwhile Pallavi focused her attention on Raghav.

“What is it?”, She spit out.

“What is what?”

“Something is clearly wrong. You’ve rejected some great sarees without even looking at them properly. Don’t waste my time and yours. Just tell me.”

“I want a saree my Amma will like.”

"From what I know of Jaya Aunty and Keerthi, Aunty isn’t a picky woman. She’ll easily like a couple of sarees from this collection.”

“You don’t understand, I want a saree that Amma will like enough to accept from me,” Raghav’s irritation was replaced with helplessness.

Pallavi sighed, “And do you think you’re going to find a saree like that?”

Raghav lowered his eyes in reply.

Pallavi sat beside him.

“I don’t know what to do to convince Amma to accept me. That I’m a good son. You’re the perfect daughter. You tell me what to do?”, Raghav turned to Pallavi.

“Raghav, I think you should just listen to your amma.”

“Of course I do that. You’ve seen me and Amma! I always listen to her.”

“From what I’ve seen, you only hear what she says.”

They sat in silence as Raghav contemplated what Pallavi had just said. After a while, he got up.

“I’m going to try what you told me to do. I’ve tried everything I thought of, might as well try to do what Amma thinks.”

Pallavi smiled.

“Anyways I still want to buy a saree for her. So please help me find a good one.”, he said as he looked around.

She chuckled, “Well if you put it so nicely, I might as well help you. This time, however, I make the rules.”

“And what are these rules?,” Raghav asked.

“We go through all the 25 sarees you rejected once again. You are very respectful of me and the sarees. And finally, I can add rules whenever I wish.”

“This feels like a trap,” Raghav narrowed his eyes.

“It’s all you have now. Take it or leave it.”

“That’s not fair.”

“You should have thought about fair before insulting my shop.”

“I was very troubled then!”

“Well you aren’t anymore.”

“Hmph, fine, I accept your terms and conditions,” Raghav gave in.

Pallavi grinned.

They resumed the hunt. Pallavi spoke a paragraph about each saree while Raghav patiently listened. He followed all her rules and Pallavi, to her credit, didn’t misuse her power.

They finally settled on a beautiful cream coloured saree.

“Amma will love this, it’s her favourite colour.”, Raghav smiled, pleased at his choice.

Pallavi neatly packed the saree and handed it over to Raghav.

“Thank you. Saree ka Dukaan for the saree and the advice.”

“You’re welcome, Ghamandi Rao. I see you’re saying a lot of thank you’s to me nowadays. You’ve finally learnt some manners due to me. ”

“I have always had manners. I merely didn’t consider you worth the effort,” Raghav said casually.

“Woah Mr. Rao! You’re on thin ice. Don’t forget that you owe me now.”

“I never forget my debts Pallavi Deshmukh. I’ll pay them back, with interest. Ardham Ainda”

“We’ll see about that.”, Pallavi smiled as Raghav walked out of the store.
