Hi, I am a newbie here and joined the forum very recently after the Holi episode. I recently saw the first promo of Imlie again which made me think of what I thought then and how I feel about the show now, so just thought to pen some thoughts.
When I saw the first promo, I felt this will be another rondhu show about a woman falling into terrible circumstances and watching her husband disregard her and another saas Bahu drama. I honestly was not very interested in watching it so much. Also, watching the promos and glimpses of the initial episodes did not make my opinion much better and I did not follow the show for a long time.
Recently when I saw the promo when Adi says that he has fallen in love with their relationship, it felt so beautiful that I thought to revisit the show and see how did it happen. I binge watched all the episodes in one go and was pleasantly surprised with the story and the characterization of the leads. The anticipation of what would happen next and the need to analyse the story compelled me to join the forum.
With what is currently going on in the story, I feel many fans and shippers are losing heart and feeling that the story has lost steam. For those people and the others I would like to say the following:
- The show has come a long way in 150 episodes. They have managed to pack in a lot of storytelling and movement, especially when you compare it to regular ITV whose secrets don't start coming out for hundreds of episodes "cough" Ekta "cough"
- The characters are very multi-dimensional, including the supporting cast. I know I will get some flak for this but the fact that apart from the leads, characters like an AC, DC or Tripathi's all garner such a response from the viewers means that the creatives have literally "phoonked" jaan into them and they feel real, rather than cardboard cutouts that just stand in the frame. Whether we hate them or love them, getting a reaction from the audience means they are doing their job right
- Malini's character - With all the opinions floating around I would just like to say that she feels real and flawed. I free with some points saying that she is manipulative and is trying to hold on to something that is no longer there, but that also makes her character very humane and natural. While I do not support her decision to end things, I was not surprised. Emotionally she is so fragile that her reaction to anything that seems out of her control is to harm herself in some way. She is almost like the princess who has never had to deal with failure, so she makes the other person feel guilt over making her fail rather than introspecting on what is her fault. For all the people saying that she is the wife and she is being cheated on, remember there are always 2 sides to every story. Her marriage did not break down just because someone else came in between them, but also because the communication between husband and wife had started to break down. Somewhere after marriage their relationship had changed which was not something that Malini was prepared for. For people who say that she had given her 7 years to the relationship, well even Adi had given his share of the same amount of time. Also many a time people who have been amazing friends for many years realize their incompatibility after a few months after they get married, so I don't think that should be the reason they need to be together.
- Adi' character - I pove Adi's character the most as I feel that his character has had the most interesting arc that I have seen in ITV. He started out as and ideal and righteous man who never bowed down to say the truth. From there he went to a perso who had to keep such a big secret to protect his status quo. I do not know wheter he loved Malini then or just felt that he had to uphold his commitment to her, but he felt the need to protect her feelings from his situation as much as possible. He tried to tell the truth many times but chickened out because it is not easy to take that responsibility of owning a truth that can have devastating repercussions. When he fell in love with Imlie he immediately understood how thos feelings were different than the ones he had for Malini. He was still a cheater, but somewhere he felt connected to Imlie in a way that he didn't with Malini. That does not justify him but it does make him human. His character reminds me of SRK's character in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. While there his character got the ending that looked happy from the outside, the consequences may not be rosy always. I feel that even though he may seperate himself from Malini to be with Imlie, I feel their friendship is going to have long term effect on his relationship with Imlie. (If story goes as per IK at least)
- Imilie's character - What can I say, Imlie is the one FL I really admire on ITV. She is one of the few people who proved that "Gaon ke log hamesha gavaar nahi hote". Also she has time and again shown that her strength of character is not matchable to anyone as she is unique in her approach and her views are genuinely deep in things that matter. She has a deep complex of losing her loved ones and also being brought up without her father has sown the seeds of abandonment in her. So she is willing to go to any lengths to protect her relationships, sometimes even from herself. She is 19 and not very worldly, so she takes emotional decisions which affect her perception in others minds. While I feel that her getting together with Aditya is what we all want, but that is going to have a lot more problems till she understands the nuances of the relationships she is surrounded by.
So for all my fellow viewers, let us keep going on this "roller coaster" and trust that the creative teams give us a show to be proud of being a part of.
