Taking the opportunity to say I detest Imtiaz Ali's movies. He comes across as a very nice guy in his interviews. But his movies make me want to throw a chair at the TV.

I actually loved his first 4-5 movies - Socha na tha, JWM, LAK, Rockstar, Highway. Highway being my favorite. His direction style is something I really enjoy and I think he reached his peak with Highway - capturing the emotions of the characters with not just their performances but their surroundings as well

Tamasha, I enjoyed a fair bit, but it lacked something - still gave him the benefit of doubt, because he had taken up a bit of a challenging story.

Then he dropped the ball with JHMS (and this coming from a hardcore SRK fan). The story was just too flimsy for anyone to contribute anything on the screen.

And finally, LAK 2 - he has just hit his lowest point (I hope). Horrible throughout.

Only thing consistently good throughout his movies has been the music of his movies. I dont think he has ever given a below average or even average album. Its always been in the good to fantastic range

My problem is all his male main characters are too darned self-indulgent and whiny. And the ladies always help them grow up.

Why? Why, why, why?

Your emotional immaturity is not the responsibility of your romantic partner. (rhetorical you)

One complete person (man or woman) deserves another, not an overgrown 14 yo.

Hmm interesting critique and I can understand that as a problem some people might have. I do not find that too problematic though. Its just a story he is telling and more often than not, his characters are convincing and relatable

And I do not see what is wrong with an individual (whether a man or a woman) growing as a person after getting into a relationship. Especially if it is for the better. I feel its actually very natural

People have to grow in relationships. Character arc, etc. In real life relationships also, this happens.

But his movies, and several other books/movies, feature the emotionally stunted boy/man whose entire mental growth comes courtesy the romantic partner! She ends up part lover, part mother, part teacher, part nurse. Not a healthy relationship. And it is not portrayed as dysfunctional, either.

Such immature and unreliable characters are extremely tiresome in real life.
