I don't watch this show but I am genuinely curious why this is the most watched show in india both on tv and online.
Can anyone explain? I am too lazy to actually see it.😂 I only saw one episode with rakhi doing ott stuff and was bored to death.
In my opinion, the only reason I was glued to watch this show is since it’s initial promos, it was made quite clear, but in a subtle way, that the female lead is the protagonist of this drama while the male lead is the main antagonist of her life. Anupama, the female lead, is the male lead’s wife but comes from a vey lower middle class family. Anu is a home maker and cooks amazingly, dances well, takes care of everyone wholeheartedly, is on her toes from early morning to midnight to do the household chores, respect her elders, and loves her husband unconditionally. Vanraj, the male lead, is at a Manager post in an MNC and the sole bread-earner of his family with 3 grown up kids: Paritosh (Toshu), Samar and Pakhi (Sweety), and his parents. While everyone loves her, especially Samar and Bapuji (her Father in law) who believes she’s a perfect daughter in law, mother, wife and a woman, others have their own reason of being disrespectful towards her. The major reasons being she isn’t well educated (only 12th pass), doesn’t speak English and isn’t well spoken, always wear simple sarees and isn’t that presentable at home or even outside, even though she’s very beautiful by face with normal weight, is polite and kind-hearted.
The major attraction for this show until now has been the character sketch of most of the characters. The makers have minutely and beautifully described personality traits of each character and have given justified screen presence to them to make it look more realistic yet likeable.
While the positives characters have been discussed so far, let’s have a look at the antagonists.
Vanraj Shah, as discussed before, is the sole bread earner of this big Gujarati middle class family living in Ahmedabad. He is a smart looking, handsome and well-educated person who believes to look at least 10 years younger his age as he’s extremely fit and health conscious. He also earns averagely well, loves his kids and parents unconditionally and tries to fulfilling all their demands. While he gives so much importance to all, he’s more egoistic and proud of his achievements and hence totally disregards Anu who has never raised a voice against his treatment towards her and yet has always loved him blindly. He loves all the household chores that Anu does, especially her food, but never fails to taunt and scold her if she forgets any, even for a second. For instance, Anu was once visited by her childhood friend, who is now divorced and lives in the US, at home after a long time. She took Anu out alone for a while to have fun with her for the first time ever after her marriage. But just because she was slightly late to arrive home and there were delays in serving water, tea and food to Vanraj after his return from office, even though Pakhi, Baa and their servant were present at home to serve, he threw Anu out of their house for being careless and irresponsible.
Considering Anu doesn’t fulfil Vanraj’s criteria of being his ideal wife, majorly because she isn’t that presentable, he has an affair with his colleague and his subordinate Kavya since last 8 years from the actually storyline today. Keeping this affair a secret, Vanraj never failed to bring Kavya home and demean Anu in front of Kavya and the Shah family, who is loved by Baa, Pakhi, Toshu and even Anu as a perfect modern women.
Baa, is a typical Indian mother-in-law in the Shah family. She totally loves her family and always wants them to stay together, only to be controlled by her. Vanraj is baa’s eldest child who she loves wholeheartedly and considers him ‘Raja beta’ who can never go wrong. Considering her son has so many good qualities, she too believes Anu is a mismatch for Vanraj as she was chosen by Vanraj’s grand mother and not herself. Hence, she always scolds her, taunts her and even blames her for all the mishaps, if any, at home. In fact doesn’t leave any stone unturned to misbehave with Anu’s family (majorly consisting of Anu’s mother, her brother and brother’s son Mehul) who are poor and put them down at every occasion.
Toshu, is the eldest child of Vanraj-Anu who is intelligent and wants to achieve more than his father. He is preparing for his MBA exams and is loved by all, especially Vanraj for being good in his studies. While he is loved by all, he totally ignores how much his mother loves him and ignores her for all her efforts for him, his father and their family. Hence, he even didn’t care to tell Anu about Kinjal, his lady love from college, whom Vanraj and Baa have already considered for a marriage alliance with.
Pakhi, a young girl, and Vanraj-Anu’s third child, studying higher secondary in Ahmedabad’s one of the top and expensive schools. She isn’t good at studies but always wants to be in the limelight at home and in school. She too loves her mom’s food but is totally upset about the fact that Anu isn’t as modern as her friend’s moms. Hence, she has always adored Kavya and calls Kavya her ‘bestie’. She too never fails to demean Anu and has even insisted Kavya to take Anu’s place at her school events occasionally, like presenting a stall as Pakhi’s mom at school’s Annual day function. Vanraj has always pampered Pakhi and Toshu. So much that he, along with his 2 kids, have always named Anu and Samar as ‘Loser Gang’, considering Anu isn’t well educated and talks with a typical Gujarati accent and Samar wants to be a professional dancer just like his mom and isn’t interested in studying further.
Some other characters like Vanraj’s sister, his BIL Sanjay and their daughter are shown on and off. Vanraj’s sister is well educated at works at a pvt firm too. She is quite considerable towards Anu but doesn’t go one step ahead to stop Vanraj or Baa or others to blame Anu for any reason. Sanjay, however, pays huge regards to Anu. They both consider each other as siblings. Sanjay, in fact, always tries to appreciate her for her efforts and capabilities and supports her. Baa’s brother, u married, also stays with them and is usually unsupportive of her sister like Bapuji. But he’s a funny character who very quickly forgets things.
After one month of the show, new characters like Kinjal, who is now Toshu’s wife after many hardships, Kinjal’ mom Rakhi Dave and her father Pramod Dave are shown. Pramod Dave mostly remains out of focus from the story. Kinjal is a sweet, beautiful and well-educated girl. She loves Anu and her inner strength as a women. She has always reprimanded Toshu for being rude towards Anu, for instance, not giving Anu her due place, shouting at her for not knocking on the door before entering his room when Kinjal is present, etc.
Rakhi Dave is a cunning, rich entrepreneur who owns famous Coaching Classes in Ahmedabad. She hails from a rich family but because she married a man who isn’t rich at all, she made her husband leave his aged parents and shift to her house. She has always been against Toshu-Kinju’s marriage alliance since the day she discovered Anu is his mom. She too has the same problem like other members and that’s when Toshu started distancing himself from Anu more. Vanraj and Rakhi have always been at loggerheads due to their short-tempered nature. But gradually, Anu helped subdue Rakhi’s misunderstandings due to her strong personality as a mother which she portrayed at several instances like standing up for Kinjal to marry Toshu, protecting Pakhi from her classmate, helping Bapuji in a health emergency and many more.
Presently, since Toshu and Kinju got married secretly, Rakhi, though initially tried breaking their relationship and pull Toshu towards her with money, Rakhi has been supportive of the family especially because of Anu’s strong stand towards her husband’s extra marital affair.
Since the truth of Vanraj’s extra marital affair is out in public, a changed Anu is shown fighting all odds to seek divorce. The show since then has been quite a roller coaster with tonnes of mix emotions flowing from all characters.
In short, the crisp storyline of a women who struggles to be a perfect modern independent women is what the show is about beautifully captured by actors like Rupali, Sudhanshu, Tasneem, Baa, etc. Hence the show is a must watch for all ages and is quite remarkable in terms of storyline, especially when it is portrayed on ITV which is known to disregard, subdue and disrespect women in general.
