Yeah, that COVID effect is definitely there, as seen with Mumbai Saga's opening. The opening would've been double (atleast) if not for COVID.

Sooryavanshi is going to be a huge underperformer if things continue to go this way with rising cases. I have no idea why they decided on an April 30 release date, because not just COVID, there is also the Ramzan period and then Radhe/SJ2 coming two weeks later.

When you've waited an entire year already, why not just wait a little longer?

These movies are releasing on OTT much earlier than the traditional window of 8 weeks so there is indeed a deal with OTT!Also producers never loose money !Its always the distributors that are in red!Of course hits and flops exist but that can be neglected in these trying times because releasing a film in such times is purely experimental!

It's more that in India the words blockbuster /average/ flop are all based on theatrical profit and loss of distributors. Many if not most films make profits for producers and investors that don't make money for distributors. Otherwise they'd stop producing films.

In this case if a film goes direct to VOD distributors and cinemas will get nothing. The distributor fees have to been lowered so they and the cinemas can make profit with the film before going quicker to VOD where the producers make profit.

Salman's film was scheduled to go direct to VOD for I think 250c. To help theater owners out it was decided to wait and then open it in theaters but go to VOD 3 weeks later.
