Bollywood love stories, after the wedding
It happens all the time. Boy meets girl, they fall in love and, eventually get married. That's how most famous Bollywood romances have been realised anyway. Only here, thanks to their profession, these jodis get to fall in love all over again, for screen sake. While some couples shine better with every reel romance, others are unable to recreate the original magic. rediff.com takes a look at the changing equations of Bollywood's star couples, before and after marriage. Kishore Kumar and Madhubala Her breathtaking beauty and his frolicsome ways made for an oddball team. And yet one could never get enough of watching Madhubala and Kishore Kumar's animated banter. After hitting it off on-the-sets of Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, the couple quietly got married. Even post-marriage, their screen chemistry didn't lose any of its rollicking magic as evident in comic capers like Half Ticket and Jhumroo.
Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu Despite their 20-year age difference, Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu enjoy the reputation of remaining one of the industry's most cherished couples.

Their on-screen pairing, however, had no such luck.

Although they were never cast opposite each other before marriage, the tragedy King and his prim Queen decided to star together post marriage. They did films like Gopi, Bairaag and Sagina, which met with a lukewarm response.

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan Amitabh Bachchan has known his wife Jaya longer than his success. Perhaps that's what makes their hands-on chemistry all the more enchanting.

After collaborating on Prakash Mehra's superhit, Zanjeer, which changed the course of Big B's career, the two tied the knot.

They continued to regale audiences with their collective charm in films like Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Mili, Sholay, Silsila and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

Dharmendra and Hema Malini The picture-perfect jodi of the gorgeous Hema Malini and the macho Dharmendra is something celluloid dreams are made of. Clearly, the audience couldn't get enough of this magical twosome. They worked together on more than two dozen movies including big hits like Seeta Aur Geeta, Jugnu, Naya Zamana, Raja Rani and Sholay. While the audience fell in love with them, they fell head over heels for each other. Though Dharmendra was already married with kids, he opted for a low-profile wedding with Hema Malini.

Post-marriage, Hema went on to click better with Rajesh Khanna (Kudrat, Mehbooba) and Big B (Satte Pe Satta, Naseeb, Desh Premee), while her films like Razia Sultan and Jaan Hatheli Pe with Dharam paji ate box office dust.

Smita Patil and Raj Babbar

Like most Bollywood romances, theirs too began on the sets of a film, Bheegi Palkein. The earthy Smita Patil was floored by Raj Babbar's fun-loving attitude.

The much-married actor (to Nadira Babbar) also found a deep attachment to his onscreen heroine like Mirch Masala and Jawab. Their controversial decision to tie the knot attracted immense flak.

In a tragic turn of events, Smita passed away during child birth. Their last project together, Waaris, featured Babbar as her younger sister's (Amrita Singh) love interest.

Ajay Devgan and Kajol Okay, so their chemistry may not be as crackling as the one shared by Kajol and another leading man, Shah Rukh Khan. Nonetheless, the jodi is endearing. The chatty actress saw the tall, dark and handsome, Devgan, during the making of their first film, Hulchul, which turned out to be a box-office dud. Ditto for their next film Gundaraj. Fortunately, Ishq and Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha fared better. Personally too, things couldn't get any better for the Bollywood dulhania and the Omkara hero when they tied the knot. Post-marriage, however, the intense pair has only delivered eminently forgettable flops like Raju Chacha and Dil Kya Karen.

We hope their new love story, U, Me Aur Hum, which marks Devgan's directorial debut, breaks the jinx.

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Funnily, there was no attraction between the two when they initially worked on heavy-duty romances like Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke and Kuch Naa Kaho. It took a costume drama about heartbreak like Umrao Jaan to ignite sparks between Mr and Mrs Abhishek Bachchan.

While Guru hit the theatres amidst news of their engagement, Bachchan Jr and Aishwarya Rai subsequently tied the knot. Their marriage involuntarily invited extensive media coverage.

In their first outing together, post the wedding, the Bachchans will play strong-headed individuals with conflicting ideologies in Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar Raj.
