I agree the internet can be problematic. I agree that the internet spreads rumors and fake news that can take dangerous turns. Heck, the world's oldest democracy just went through an insurrection and coup attempt due to the internet. It has left the world with many questions.
At the same time, the internet is an essential medium of communication. People use to stay connected and communicate with their loved ones. It is the connection to home when you're away from home. The internet can be a valuable tool if you are ever in danger. The internet is a valuable tool to quickly disseminate information about any atrocities committed. Many people conduct their daily lives from banking to bill payment, to ordering essentials on the internet. Some even go to school on the internet. The internet is no longer a "luxury." It is an essential service.
Cutting the internet is nothing but a fascist move to suppress the voice of the people. The government is playing the role of an abusive spouse who is cutting their partner's ties to their support systems.
There are two ways to combat misinformation
1) Increase the means and access to streams of information
2) Block and punish those who spread misinformation*
Misinformation as in downright harmful and false statements. Statements that can be easily disproven using factual evidence. Having a contrarian opinion is not misinformation.
It is very easy to say the words that you are saying. Govt should punish those who spread misinformation, block those who spread misinformation and blah blah blah.
Be there practically and see the effects of how much a single rumors can cause damage, especially when people are motivated to use that misinformation to incite violence.
Blocking someone after they have already spread the rumor isn't going to help. Because damage is already done.
You lot have learned one word facism and use it at the tip of the hat.
