Chapter 3
It had been many days since Paakhi and Karishma had started joining their heads and working out a semblance of plan for her fashion designing career. Paakhi had been delighted to know that Karishma had a degree in fashion designing but couldn’t go for more of it as she had gotten married. She also was in touch with many of her friends who had studied with her. Their plan was to take as many people on their side as possible and then take the first step.
Mohit had tried talking with Sonali and Omi but they had been undecided on the matter. Even though they wanted to help their daughter in law, but Bhavani’s possible anger stopped any steps that they could have taken.
So Paakhi had decided that once Virat returned today, she will talk with Sai and him about this and then even speak with Shivani Bua. It was already late in the evening when Virat returned from the police station. He looked frazzled. Paakhi frowned. Was it all right to begin this discussion today? He already looked tired. But many days had already gone by since Karishma and her started this and Karishma was becoming hopeless of receiving any support. She couldn’t keep postponing this.
“Virat?” She called out gently. Virat turned her way and then glanced towards his bedroom nervously before walking towards her.
“Paakhi? Kuch chahiye tha tumhen? Sab theek to hai na?” He enquired in his trademark gentle style.
“Sab theek hai Virat. Tum ek kaam karo. Fresh ho jao. Aur Sai ne khana nahin khaya ab tak. Main tum dono ke liye khana bhijwati hoon. Dono saath kha kar balcony aa jana. Mujhe tum dono se kuch baat karni hai.”
“Par Paakhi? Hua kya hai?” He was confused now. And genuinely concerned for her. He had been observing changes in her since Sai asked him about her but he couldn’t ask her since weeks now. She looked different and now even sounded different. She seemed carefree and also sounded lighter in a way. He bit his lower lip in deep thought.
“Batati hoon. Jakar fresh to ho jao.” Paakhi sent him away with a carefree smile and without waiting for his answer turned to go downstairs.
Virat frowned and turned towards his bedroom. A smile had made it’s appearance on his face the moment he had entered the room and spied her at the study table. She was working hard.
“Good evening Sai.” He greeted her. She turned towards him and the moment she saw him, her face split into the widest smile it could manage. Her special smile reserved only for him. He loved that smile. It made him feel like the world was all right. And now a days he often came home to this smile.
“Good evening Virat Sir!!” She greeted back enthusiastically.
“Kya baat hai Sai? Aaj itni khush?”
“Kyun na hoon? Mera Viva zabardast gaya hai aaj. Aur aapko pata hai aaj Shilpa ne na itni khari khoti sunayi hai un taunt girls ko ki main to saatve aasmaan par ud rahi thi. Aur Aniket ka selection ho gaya kisi competition mein.” Sai started to tell him about her whole day, just like she did everyday now a days. He heard her chirp as he went about his business. She kept telling him about her day and he heard her happily. He lived the college life once again through her.
“Aur ghar par kisi ne kuch kaha to nahin na? Sab kushal mangal?” He asked humorously.
“Haan Virat Sir sab theek hai. Kaku ne koshish ki thi mujhe kaam ke baare mein sunane ki par strangely Paakhi didi ne keh diya ki who handle kar lengi Aai ke saath aur mujhe disturb na karen kyunki unhen pata chal gaya hai ki I have vivas.” Sai said thoughtfully. Virat stopped on his way to the bathroom and scrunched his eyes in confusion. What was it with Paakhi? Why was she behaving so strangely? He shrugged.
“Accha hi hai na Sai. You get more time to study. And that’s very important. I was going to speak about this to everyone tomorrow but thankfully Paakhi herself stepped ahead.”
“Haan. That’s actually sweet of her. Maine aapse kaha tha na ke Paakhi didi is behaving differently since some weeks now.”
“Hmm. Haan. Chalo main fresh ho kar aata hoon. Paakhi ne kaha hai ki woh hum dono ke liye bhej degi dinner yahin pe. So we can have food here and then she wants to speak something-”
“To you?” Sai shook her head and asked sarcastically. “Pata tha mujhe that she was planning something.” Sai said indignantly. Here she was thinking that Paakhi might have changed for the better and there Paakhi was still the same.
“Nahin Sai. Baat sunna seekho baba.” Virat scolded her softly. “Woh hum donon se kuch baat karna chahti hai.” He told her. Sai frowned and guilt crossed her face for many moments before she opened her mouth again.
“What does she want to say?”
“Ab ye to usse mil kar hi pata chalega na? Chalo mein aata hoon. You continue.” Virat said and turned towards the bathroom leaving Sai to ponder over Paakhi and the past some weeks.
When Virat came out of the bathroom, he found hot dinner awaiting him along with his wife who was already sitting at the sofa waiting for him. He smiled at her and sat beside her.
“Wah Sai. Aaj to tumhare favorite khaane hai. Dekho ek bhi dish mere pasand ki nahin hai.”
“Haan Aai keh rahi thi ki khaana Paakhi didi ne banaya hai. Mere liye. Virat Sir mujhe bahut odd lag raha hai. Aap ki best friend ki itni acchai hazam hi nahin ho rahi.”
“Pagal Sai. Koi tumhare liye kuch accha kare to accept kar lena chahiye. I know uske past behaviour ne tumhen us ke baare mein bas yahi opinions diye hain. But you should try to give her a chance Sai.”
“Hmm. Keh to aap sahi rahe hain. I will do what you are saying. But if she-”
“Then you can revert to the angry mode.” Virat said without any hesitation. Sai smiled.
“Aap aaj kal mujhe bahut acchi tarah se padhte hain Virat Sir.” She told him softly.
“Padhna padta hai. Biwiyon ko hamesha padhna padta hai Sai. Warna aadmi bechara loss mein rehta hai. After all tumhare mood pe mera din tika hota hai.” He told her with mock seriousness.
“Accha… to main khush to aap khush?”
“Haan. Tum khush to main bahut khush.”
“Aaj kal aap acche lagte hain mujhe.”
“Mujhe bhi main bahut accha lagta hoon jab tumhen accha lagta hoon.” Virat told her softly and fed her a piece of his roti. She smiled as she swallowed.

Paakhi was standing in the balcony waiting for them when Virat arrived. He stood beside her silently as she watched the grounds from the balcony. She turned towards him and smiled happily. He was reminded of a Paakhi who he had met in Nashik.
“Tum sach mein theek ho na Paakhi? Mujhe bata sakti ho!” Virat told her. She smiled.
“Jise batana tha… Use bata chuki.” Paakhi answered thinking about her letters to Samrat in her diary.
“Aaj kal aisa lagta hai jaise tum tum nahin ho.” Virat told her and she laughed.
“Ohh! To kaun hoon main? Chudail?”
“Ab chudail nahin ho.” Virat told her humorously. She watched him for some moments before she smiled.
“Thank god for that.” She muttered. “Accha Sai kahan hai?” She asked him.
“Who abhi aati hogi. Bartan samet kar.”
“Aree. Wo mein kar deti.”
“Use karna tha. Paakhi I am really grateful to you ki tum uski itni help kar rahi ho ghar mein. Wo disturb na ho is liye uske kaam bhi tum kar rahi ho.”
“Mein genuinely chahti hoon ki woh kamyaab ho jaye aur is ghar ka aur tumhara naam roshan kare along with her father’s.” Paakhi told him softly.
“Paakhi. Achanak ye sab changes?”
“Virat I have let go off all my negativity behind. Being miserable was just taking a toll on me and others around me and I had had enough. Meri life sirf wohi ek cheez nahin hai na. Ho jata hai. Aisa zaroori to nahin ki aap ka har sapna har khwahish poori ho. Par yeh zaroori hai ki aap kis tarah se us pain ko face kar rahen hai. I was facing it like a loser and I didn’t like it. So I decided that I will face it like a winner. Like someone who is strong and capable to move on. And is baat ne mujhe willpower di.”
“I am happy for you ki tum aage badh rahi ho Paakhi. Samrat ke aane ke baad you will see ki yeh decision right tha.”
“Samrat ke aane ke baad nahin Virat. Usse pehle hi I realise ki ye decision right hai. I don’t want to wait for and base my decision of moving on, on his return. I want to move on and make myself a better version of me before he returns.” Paakhi told him. “And on that account Virat I wanted to speak about another thing to you. Maukha hai aur dastoor bhi is liye abhi keh deti hoon.” She said gently. Virat was thrown in more confusion. She had already been thinking of this since some days, now it was time to bring it up. “I want you to move on too. I release you from your vow to me, your promise to me.” She told him. His eyes widened as he watched her in shock.
“Paakhi. I am still your best friend.”
“You are my friend. Meri best friend koi aur hai. Par yeh main negatively nahin keh rahi Virat. If I want to share something or need an advice I will always come to you. But I need you to be freed from the promise that no other girl will come in your life apart from me. That was a stupid promise and you shouldn’t have done it in the first place.”
“I wanted you to marry Samrat. I know it was selfish of me to decide that for the both of you but I was scared you would reject him and he would be left broken hearted.”
“He still left broken heartedly Virat. That promise didn’t do any good for any of us. But I will be damned if I allow that vow to tear your life apart along with Sai’s. So I release you from that promise. Virat I have seen you with her. You both are perfect. Even though you are totally opposite to each other, you still complete each other. You expect from her and she expects from you too. And rightly so. You are partners. Virat I have seen her eyes. She is falling for you. And the way you revolve around her at home tells me that you are too. I know woh kiddish hai but sweet hai and she needs you now and always. She sees you as her whole world. I want you to give in and let go of the bonds of your vow that is holding you back. I want her happy and too so I could move one. So I will be happy too. Complete your story Virat so I can rewrite mine.”
“Paakhi tum bahut selfless ho.”
“Abhi banna chahti hoon. Main apne alawa doosron ke baare mein bhi sochna chahti hoon. I like her Virat. And I want her to live her life like a normal eighteen year old can. I want her to enjoy her life, her college days, her first and last love in your form. And I want her successful. Because I have noticed that when you give happiness, happiness comes to you too. And I wanna be happy because I am tired of being miserable.”
“That was deep.” Virat tried to lighten their moods. Paakhi smiled.
“Life is too short to hold on to something that was never meant for you. I have realised that and once I did realise it, I observed that making these decisions and moving on was very easy.”
“Aur Samrat?”
“Samrat… Let him return Virat. We will take it from there.” Paakhi said. “In the meantime, you should definitely speak with Sai and tell her about your feelings. Life, like I said, is too short. And loved ones should always be notified of the love that you carry for them in your heart.”
“I will Paakhi. When the time feels right. I will speak to her.”
“Where is she? It’s been almost half an hour since you arrived. She hasn’t yet come.”
“Why? Are you so fed up by my presence that you want your best friend Sai to arrive?” Virat asked with narrowed eyes. They both looked at each other and burst out laughing.
Sai arrived then, carrying a tray of mugs in it. She placed the tray on the table and occupied one chair.
“Badi jaldi aa gayi tum.” Virat said to Sai who narrowed her eyes at him. He held both his hands palms forward in his defence. Paakhi was smiling at them both.
“I was making hot chocolate for all of us.” Sai told him and gestured towards the cups. “Thanks Paakhi didi for the dinner and also for giving me time to study by doing my work.”
“It’s okay Sai. You are most welcome.” Paakhi told her happily. Sai couldn’t turn away from her face. She seemed different and much more prettier this way. And just like that the ice between them had been broken.
“Accha ab to bata do ki bulaya kyun tha tumne.” Virat said as he sat next to Sai and lifted his cup. Paakhi sat before them both and the couple noticed that she was wearing a tee and pyjamas.
“Arre batati hoon. Main bas Mohit aur Karishma ka wait kar rahi hoon.” Paakhi told them as she craned her neck to see if Mohit and Karishma arrived.
“Paakhi?” Virat called in surprise. “Is that Samrat’s tee?” Paakhi turned a violent shade of red. Sai hid her smile behind her cup but Virat’s jaw dropped in shock.
“What?!” Paakhi asked defensively. “They are more comfier than my night gowns and also smell nicer.” She defended her actions. Sai began to laugh and Virat chuckled as he shook his head.
“We are not judging.” He told her. Paakhi huffed, seeming like a five year old.
“Sorry sorry sorry guys humen aane mein time ho gaya na.” Mohit called out as Karishma and he arrived at the balcony, saving Paakhi from further embarrassment .
“It’s okay. Perfect time pe aaye ho tum donon.” Paakhi told them both happily. They settled on the other seats and looked questioningly towards her. Sai laughed again and Mohit and Karishma looked at her in confusion.
“Kya hua?” Karishma enquired. Virat chuckled.
“Kuch nahin.” Paakhi tried to change the topic when Virat pointed at Paakhi.
“Mohit dekh Paakhi ne kya pehna hai.” Virat told Mohit, who turned towards Paakhi and watched her in confusion before his eyes widened and he laughed loudly.
“Arre Vahini. Samrat Dada ki t-shirt?” Mohit laughed. Karishma was giggling too. Paakhi angrily turned towards Virat, who was zipping his mouth shut.
“It’s more comfier than my night dresses!” Paakhi said again to everyone’s amusement.
“Haan haan Bhabhi! We understand that you miss him.” Karishma teased her. Paakhi surrendered herself to more rounds of teasing and laughter as she shook her head at them.
“Samrat Dada bhi yahan hote to kitna accha hota na? Kitna maza aata.” Mohit said wistfully after their laughter subsided. Virat smiled slightly too. Paakhi watched them all and sighed. They all missed him. And she, who had more right to miss him than all of them, had nothing to miss him about except what she had been told of him by the others.
“Accha ab sab shant ho jao. Hum sab yahan meeting kis liye kar rahe hain?” Sai asked to change the mood from glum to anything else.
“Haan actually who kya hai na, kuch dino se main aur Karishma discuss kar rahe the ki humen apne aspirations aur sapne ke liye work karna hai. Maine to abhi decide nahin kiya par Karishma fashion designing karna chahti hai. Uske liye we need support and also any other help we can get.” Paakhi began. Sai and Virat looked towards Karishma who was looking nervous and hopeful. Virat smiled gently at his youngest sister in law.
“Tumhari har tarah se help karenge hum Karishma. Is ghar mein paison ki kami nahin hai. Main vaada karta hoon ki Kaku ko manakar paison ki arrangement karne ki zimmedari meri.”
“Mm hmm Virat. Humari. Hum sab ki zimmedari hai ye ab. Ye one man battle nahin hai. Hum sab ko iske liye help karni hai. Karishma set ho jaye fir main aur Sai usi ki collection se kapde pehenenge. Kyun Sai?” Paakhi said.
“Haan Paakhi didi. Aur main apne college fellows se bhi iski advertising kar sakungi.” Sai replied happily. The girls started talking about newest trends of the fashion world and Virat and Mohit exchanged a long glance which was enough for the brothers to understand how content and happy they felt about this turn of events.
Soon the conversation turned to possible ways of beginning Karishma’s journey and who all could help and how they could either take people to their side or neutralise those who could stand against them. And as the night passed and a definite plan was made, the conversation turned towards more lighter subjects and everyone’s memories of the yesteryears along with Samrat at last.
•••••
Paakhi came to her own room and closed the door behind her as she smiled to herself. Today had been very enlightening and enjoyable. She had had fun after a very long time. She had felt like she had been with her friends and not her in laws at all. Paakhi had also been genuinely impressed by both Karishma and Sai. They had their own plus points which she had thoroughly witnessed and enjoyed tonight. And Mohit was fun. He was such a positive and light hearted guy that she had really spent half of the time laughing due to him. Virat was Virat. He had this air around him that could calm anybody down. And she hadn’t missed those glances that Virat and Sai kept exchanging either. She was happy for them. She had a weird sense of loss too but that was ebbing away giving way to freedom and happiness.
Paakhi moved away from the door an waltzed her way towards the bathroom to finish her nightly routines and then she waltzed back, humming merrily towards the study table where her nightly ritual awaited her.
She opened her diary and began to write.
Dear Samrat,
Tonight I have realised something. Do you wanna hear what? Too bad if you don’t because you still will. You know how when a girl marries into a family, she brings lots of hopes, dreams and expectations with her regarding the new family? The same family too has lots of dreams, hopes and expectations regarding a daughter in law. When I came, all my expectations were with Virat. I was living in my dream with him and him alone. But today I realised that all the family members had expectations from me too. Even Karishma and Mohit. They wanted a friendly Vahini and all they got was a grumpy Patralekha. I became the bane of all of their existence due to my misery. It was all my fault. But now I have realised that if I try then they will too and this way we could create a beautiful family, a beautiful friendship?
Samrat… Everybody miss you. They love you a lot. They talk so much about you. They all hope for your return. And you know… Main who pehli biwi hoon jise apne pati ke baare mein uske pati se nahin balki uske gharwalon se intro mil rahi hai. Everyday I make a new discovery about you and everyday I kinda miss you even though I do not know you at all. Is it possible that your absence is making me fond of you?
Aaj I made another discovery. Not about you. Itne important nahin ho mere liye tum. Huh. I made a discovery about Sai and Karishma. They are fun to be around and so much youthful. They are full of life and dreams and I wish they will fulfil each of it. They deserve it. Karishma seems more light hearted now that she has gotten someone on her side. She seems more carefree and less nervous.
Mansi Aai has become quite cheerful these days. There are moments where your absence is casting shadows over her but she is trying so hard to live more happily. You know I have another idea for her and Ashwini maami that I want to put forth to them once Karishma’s matter settle down.
Watching Sai and Virat interact has made me confident and happy in my decision to set him free. They both deserve to move on and be happy with each other. And watching both of them and Karishma and Mohit today has kind of made me feel lonely Samrat. I wish you were here. Those very little moments I spent with you, you have always been supportive and had made me feel special. And now I don’t have that anymore. When I enter a room, I know there is no one whose eyes would focus on me. There is no one who would smile at me and make me feel like I am the most important person in that room and in their world. Even today, everything was so good, funny and amazing but it still seemed incomplete. And then I realised it was you. Even though I am not in love with you yet, I still would have felt much better by your side.
Samrat… These weeks have made me realise that I didn’t know you. But I surely want to. I want to sit with you and speak about my feelings. I want your honest opinions criticizing my decisions. And I want to watch your eyes light up when I enter any room you are in.
I just feel so lonely. Even with so many people crowding around me.
Samrat… I wish you return soon. Because I need you. I… miss you. I wish you were here to support me in my decisions henceforth. But you are not here. So I, Paakhi Salunkhe promise you that I will stay strong and face the oncoming battles bravely.
Thank you for listening to me Samrat.
Promoted by myself to your best friend,
Paakhi.

So? How was it? Liked it?
Thank you all so much for the wonderful words and support. Keep them coming people.
Also can you guys tell me which career choice you think is best for Paakhi and why?
See you soon, ‘ila liqaa’.
