I'm simply ignoring all those plants and flowers now. She just goes on and on about them.

I've also noticed how the protagonist keeps reiterating her points every few paragraphs, and while I'm liking the overall story, this is something I don't like. 😳

yeah but why is this book so popular...uss time mein kam books aati thi kya?

@Shanam: I made a mistake. I don’t have over 100 unread books, I have over 80 😛

I own a little over 100 books. I usually exchange my old books which I know I won’t read again, and buy new or second hand ones. I usually try to not have more than 100 books because otherwise I won’t have place to keep them. I don’t like keeping my books in piles on the floor. I also don’t like hoarding too many (says the person with 100 books 😛) so I usually exchange the ones I don’t read and try not to buy books if I won’t have place to keep them. Now my shelves are full and my TBR is overflowing and hence the self imposed book buying ban.

Still plenty of books.

And that's good way to read and not just hoard.

I was thinking the same thing. I think so many books with similar stories have been published after this book. So if we have read those books first we wouldn't get the reason for its popularity.

Funny, I like the flowery part as I have keen interest in botany and gardening. I found it fascinating as it gave distinct picture of the place. I wonder how lovely Manderley would be

And I didn't like the insect naming part in WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING As I didn't have interest in zoology.

So it's just matter of interest

If I did that, I won't be able to do anything other than reading in my life

I am 40% through with Rebecca and I am liking it. I hope the story doesn’t proceed in the same manner and that something actually happens. My issue with classics I have read recently, be it Anna Karenina, The Shining and even Rebecca is that all 3 of them could have been at least 50-80 pages shorter (about 200 pages in the case of Anna Karenina). I guess the authors really liked going in depth with descriptions and wanted to paint a vivid picture for the readers.
With some of the books published these days, my issue is that things move forward too quickly and there isn’t much importance given to background and character development.

I guess there is no middle path.

Was the shining a classic too?😲 No wonder I found it so long and difficult to read.

I am almost halfway through Rebecca, I like the story. My only annoyance is that the chapters are too long.

Yes, I realise why such an elaborate description was necessary but I'm still happy that they moved to their new rooms with the view of the rose garden. I recognise roses!!😆

That book had plenty of plants in it too. I didn't much care for either the insects or the plants. I'd rather have the books talking about DNA fingerprinting and criminal tracing and such things. That's the part I liked the most in WTCS too.
