He is the original superstar- good looks, talent and sooooo much charisma. I miss the times when superstars could also act. Look at the 50s and 60s- Nargis, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Waheeda Rahman, Guru Dutt and even Raj Kumar were superb actors first and then stars second.
How did we get it so backwards?
They didn’t need to have God-like physiques or the dancing skills either. They could focus on their craft which was acting. We truly have it backwards now where superficiality is everything. Not saying we don’t have good or even great actors now, but the superstars kind of get lost in their own aura and tend to leave the acting behind the crowd pleasing and the image maintaining and all the other frivolous aspects of being a public persona.
I love how DK conveys anger, his entire body stiffens and his eyes blink and kind of moisten, and that feels so real to me. Understated. Classy. Very different portrayal from a certain angry young man who showed his anger with a lot of physicality. Not that that portrayal was any less effective but Dilip Kumar is truly like a textbook on acting along with Balraj Sahni, Motilal and so many other greats.
