Chapter 8 – The Hunt

Malhar had been taken into custody by the police, Sarthak who had followed them to the precinct identified himself as Malhar’s lawyer and requested the police to get a tox screen panel done on Malhar’s blood. Since the entire incident had happened over the weekend, Sarthak could not file for the bail until the next weekday. Malhar wanted to desperately look for Kalyani but couldn’t as he had to spend the night in the lockup. As a police officer he knew that the first 24hrs was very crucial in any kidnapping case and if they did not make headway within that time then the chances of finding Kalyani would start becoming bleaker by the hour. He begs Sarthak to stop worrying about him and requests him to head back home to see if there were any ransom calls.

Since Kalyani was the DM of the city, her abduction was a high profile case. A special team of investigators had been appointed by the ministry to take charge on it. Since Malhar was their prime suspect, a part of the investigators started interrogating him, some headed out to the local hospitals to check if there was any woman matching Kalyani’s description admitted to the hospital, and the rest headed out to Ahilya Niwas to set up a tap and trace on the phone lines in order to dissect any ransom calls, should they be made. They also reach out to Kalyani’s secretary Ankur to compile a list of Kalyani’s possible enemies.

During interrogation, Malhar opens up about everything that had happened on the day of the party and the day after it. He also indicates how he didn’t remember anything that had happened with him or her. While they didn’t entirely believe his story as he was their suspect, they also didn’t rule it out entirely. They used parts of it to establish a timeline. The entire day goes by in intense interrogations of Malhar and some of Kalyani’s possible enemies but all goes in vain. No ransom calls were received as well. This was now looking more like a crime of passion rather than a random abduction. The investigators release Kalyani’s details and photos to the local newspapers and local news channels in Aurangabad in order to find any witnesses or any information about her whereabouts. They set up a tip line for the same. On the other hand, Malhar was completely destroyed. He was reminiscing all of their fond memories and was praying to have one last opportunity to meet her again.

Next Day at the arraignment, Anupriya being the prosecutor exhibited the resort video, the crime scene photos as evidences for Malhar’s remand while Sarthak exhibited the tox screen panel as an evidence for his release. The tox panel showed the presence of a cocktail of drugs in Malhar’s system, this shed light on why he wasn’t able to remember anything. Based on the evidences presented and Malhar’s ties to the law enforcement community, the judge didn’t deem him as a flight risk and therefore released him on his own recognizance pending trial. But since there was an ongoing investigation against Malhar, he was suspended from his job. At this point, he really didn’t care about anything other than finding his Kalyani. He was going to do it with or without his uniform and nobody was going to be able to stop him. Once his release procedure was complete, Malhar immediately headed out on his mission. He spent the rest of the day visiting various places to find Kalyani but he was unsuccessful in finding her and a disheartened Malhar returned home.

At Ahilya Niwas:

The moment Malhar stepped in, Anupriya stopped him and reminded him that not being in jail did not mean that he was innocent. And that she had agreed to stay with him only to keep an eye on him. She tells him that she knew that he was doing all this to get back at her and that she was not going to let him get away with this. She taunts him for proclaiming his love for a girl that he intended to destroy. Sarthak who was witnessing all this, could do nothing in Malhar’s defence because he knew that Anupriya was right in her place.

A teary eyed Malhar was silently listening to her as he knew that no matter how flawed she was, Anupriya was first and foremost, a fierce mother who loved her daughter dearly. She was not going to rest until she found Kalyani as did he. He dropped to her feet and apologizes for his horrible treatment of Kalyani. He mentioned that while he wanted to avenge Swara’s death, he never intended the same on Kalyani. Even if he wanted to, he could have never done anything ill towards his Kalyani as she was an integral part of his life. He promises to Anupriya that he would find Kalyani and bring her back at any cost even if it was the last thing he ever did in his life. Anupriya angrily walks out of there in disapproval.

A week had gone by and Kalyani had still not been found but the investigation was going on in full swing. Numerous tips had come in on the tip line but unfortunately they had all turned out to be false. Anupriya was completely distraught and was slowly losing hope of Kalyani’s return. She used to take out all this anger on Malhar and Sarthak, who were quietly taking it. Malhar had become the shell of a man he once was, he was completely broken. Life without Kalyani was a bane to him, he had already lost her once and he was not ready to lose her again. He was looking for her day in and day out in but she was nowhere to be found. Disappointment had taken over his life, he was constantly cursing himself for not having cherished her while she was with him.

That night, the investigators arrived at Ahilya Niwas with a piece of evidence that shocked all the members of the house to their very core.

What had the investigators found? What was that evidence? Had they found out Kalyani’s location? Why were they at Ahilya Niwas at this late hour? How was it going to affect everyone’s life? Find out more in Chapter 9.
