Chapter 32: Wedding Blues
Everyone was excited. There were guests. I was being introduced to quite a large number of people. Business associates of Ali Sheikhs. I wore a Cinderella blue outfit with silver design. There wasn't a heavy embroidery but it was pretty. There was embroidery but not like those in bridal ones.
"I must admit, Nasir, like always you have chosen the best daughter in law for your family. Only Ali Sheikhs can tackle their growing rival so easily." One of the men said. Abbu looked at me and smiled.
"Daughter in law? What daughter in law? I am just bringing my daughter to my home. About being business rival, a father is more glad when his daughter surpasses him. Aur jab beti itni talented ho toh usse zyada khushi kya ho sakti hai?" Abbu told them, putting an arm around my shoulder. I smiled. For a moment I got worried would he ask me to leave dad's company and join his?
"So, when are you joining the Ali Sheikhs at business?" Another associate of his asked.
"Akhil ji, the best thing about my daughter is that she doesn't leave anything unfinished. Until she takes her company to the top, she's not going make further plans." Abbu covered for me. I smiled. He took ahead. "I don't want to worry yourself with all this, bete. Don't mind them just like I don't mind them. People say what they want but one has to follow their heart when it is a matter that is important to you. Of course, take advices but in the end, follow your gut. You're quite intelligent and can make your own decisions. The important thing is to stand strong on it. Most men cannot handle a woman being so efficient. It makes them feel incompetent and that's why they try to break their spirit but don't let it fall. You're a Queen. Don't shout it, let them see it. No Queen needs to shout to prove who she is, a tigress walks and the jungle knows she's the queen of the jungle."
"I just worry that I'll fall weak against dad again, Abbu. I know he doesn't mean bad but he doesn't see past his over confidence. I admit that he has been handling the company for many years but everyone can make mistakes." I confessed to him. "Then the way he is with this wedding. I want him to like Jalal, Abbu."
He made me sit next to him.
"I also have a daughter, Jodha. It takes a while for any father to accept that there is a man whose opinion matter to her just as much as his or maybe more than his. To think that she wants to leave him behind and walk up with another man is difficult to accept. That's why they tend to bring a man they think will adjust according to him and hence she will still be his daughter before his wife. Ab tume Jalal AR pyaar hai. Is pyaar ke khatir tum shaadi karna chahti ho. Jalal tume pehle apna pyaar aur apni biwi samjhega. Na ki tumhare dad ki beti. Tum uske liye Jodha Ho. Heer Ho. Uske khayal yeh hai hi nahi ki tum Aakash Singh ki beti Ho. Pyaar hai toh is baat ka ilm nahi hota ki Woh kis ghar se, Kis khaandaan se hai ya Kis jahan ka hai. Sirf pyaar ka aashiyana hai. Jahan Tum Ho, woh hai aur tum dono ka pyaar hai. Abh yeh sabh dekh kar tumhare dad ko aise lagega ki unki laadli unse dur jaa rahi hai. He loves in a different way but he does. Spend some time with him. Take him out somewhere. Let him know that whatever it is, he will always be your father. He'll try to ease into it." He told me.
I hugged him. He patted my head.
"You know, when I first married Shazia, I was sure that there couldn't possibly be any other woman I could love as much as I love her. But then I held Sam for the first time in my hands and I knew that she has a hold on me that even my wife doesn't. Jaan chali jaaye gham nahi par meri Pari mujhse dur Ho jaaye, yeh kaise hone dun. To understand that one day she won't be Samaira Ali Sheikh but Samaira something else, it is a bit harsh. I had spent years in accepting this. Since the first time she told me that she had a boyfriend. At first even I disliked the boy a lot. I can't even remember if I had a conversation with that didn't seem like an interrogation. A while later, I started getting in terms with it. Took me four years to accept it. You never had that stage in your life, so all this is so sudden for him." He added.
They started playing music. He patted on my back. I got up and walked to dad.
"Mind to dance with me?" I asked him. He wasn't extremely happy but nonetheless accepted my offer. "I guess you're still angry with me."
"I can't exactly be the happiest. My daughter has literally asked me to step out of her life and not make decision for her."
"Dad, I have never said that I don't consider your advices. Except for this, tell me the one time I have ever not done what you've told me to."
"Exactly, Jodha. All your life, I have been someone to give you suggestions and today you've decided that it is not important to consider my permission."
I sighed at that.
"Dad, I give you my words. Three days. In three days you find me one thing about Jalal that seems wrong to you. I'll myself break up the wedding. Find me one thing that would make my life with him impossible."
"This is not a game, Jodha."
"I am not seeing it as a game but you're just not ready to open yourself and see him. Everyone can see how much Jalal loves me then why do you hate him so much?"
"I don't hate him. Just that I dislike him."
Dad and I danced together. Everyone seemed to think it was so cute.
"What has he done to make you dislike him, dad?"
"He took away my daughter without asking me first. Who gave him the right to do that?"
"It would be funny to think that anyone can take that away from you, dad. You are my father. Sanjay couldn't take from you so how can Jalal take it away from you?"
"Since the moment that boy entered your life, you've started to see me as a villian in your life. Everything that you do is in accordance with what he says. Neither am I a part of your life anymore, nor does my advice count."
"Sorry if I have made you feel less worthy, dad, but you've simply made up your mind. Nothing I say can change it."
I could feel those tears forming. I quickly excused myself. Outside, I broke into tears. I felt arms around me. She rubbed my arms to comfort me.
"Mom, why does he have to be so hard? After all these years he is saying that he think I have set him aside. If I didn't care about what he had to say then I would have run away and gotten married but I don't want to do that. I care that he has to be a part of my life." I sobbed softly.
"Bhabhi, have you seen bhai? What happened? Why are you crying?" Samaira came up to me quickly.
"Nothing..." I wiped off my tears. Samaira held my hands.
"Is it about Mr Singh?" She asked and mom nodded. She sat down next to me.
"Trust me, I've been there. Dad used to be really angry at me. He refused to speak to me but hardly would there be a day where he wouldn't come to check up on me if I was fine. I don't know Mr Singh but I know about how a father can get. They'll get so much more dramatic than us. I don't know how your childhood was but when abbu wouldn't get me my favourite chocolate, I would get really upset at him. I would refuse to speak to him and even refuse to eat dinner. Trust me, I would be starving for food but still wouldn't eat because of that stubborn. He would come and constantly try to please me. Dad acted the same way when he found out about my boyfriend. I had to please him the same way he would try to please me." She told me.
"He just seems to have decided not to like him at all." I complained.
"Baby, he's your father. He has that 'I have loved her first' thing going in his mind. If he's your father, you're also his daughter. Don't think it will never be fine. Be determined to let him see how much it means to you." She encouraged him. I smiled.
All of us returned inside and then saw Jalal sitting with dad. They were playing chess. I knew that dad can't beat Jalal. He's just really good at it. That wired part of his brain that has still parts of an emperor in him doesn't let him be defeated at Chess. He's just a great player.
Dad was a national level chess player. It is like his pride. Everyone was gathered around. My family was quite intently watching. I could tell that Jalal knew how to win even in the most difficult situation. He's played with the best players and still won.
"Heer, you can't just create a mess when you're losing. Come on." He complained. Both of us around 19 years old. Emperor and his Queen but still were childish.
"I'm doing that because you keep cheating. It isn't possible that I lose four times in a row." I complained.
"Heer, jaan, let's just admit that you can defeat me. I am supposed have great winning strategies. I am expected to run an empire." He tried to explain. I was really annoyed.
"You cheat all the time." I was adamant. He rolled his eyes.
"I don't cheat, You just lose." He commented.
"No."
"Yes."
"No"
"Yes"
"No"
"Yes"
"No"
"I'm the Emperor. My word is final."
"I'm also the Queen. My word is just as valid as yours."
"Kitni ziddi hai aap, Heer? Abh haar chuki hai toh qubool bhi kar lein."
"Hum haare hi nahi toh kyu maan le?"
"Yeh sabko pata hai ki aap haar chuki hai, Heer."
I started throwing rose petals set in a water bowl at him. I laughed as the water dripped from his face. He gave me a look.
"This might not end well for you, your majesty." He threatened him. I took off instantly. He started running behind. He had the advantage of knowing all the shortcuts. He pushed me into the pool. I pulled him with me.
"What is happening here?" Maham Anga showed up.
"Nothing, badi ammi. Just that we decided to take a swim." He covered up for us. "Well, I got her here." He ran his hands through his hair giving an impression that whatever it was that happened between is majorly a husband-wife thing so that she wouldn't start interogating us or scold me for being so childish.
"It would be better if both of you go change. Jalal, if you want to do something with your wife, wouldn't your room be a rather private place for that? Going around here in the pool isn't the most romantic thing. Or at least doesn't sound to me." She pointed out. Not exactly scolding him but in a passive tone. Jalal laughed.
"Badi ammi, how old are you? I guess 52 years old. So, your idea of romance and mine are going to differ." He answered chuckled. She couldn't really say much to the Emperor. He was the King. Her laadla beta whose word is the law. He got out of the pool and helped. "Anyway, like you have suggested, we will go and change into dry clothes. Aadab."
It is a surprise with the way he handles Maham Anga. While giving her all the respect, he also knows how to do what he wants.
A moment later, everyone in my family cheered and clapped. Dad won. Jalal just let there be a smile on his face.
"I should know. You're a national level chess player, after all." Jalal boasted. I know for a fact that he lost purposely. Even his family knows that.
"Well, Jalal bhai is generally the best chess player. None of us have ever been able to defeat him. You must be really good." Abbu said with a smile.
"He is." Jalal added. Others went up ahead to other things since the match was over.
"I couldn't have ever met a Chess player who make such a silly mistake. You did it on purpose, didn't you?" Dad asked him. Jalal just smiled.
"You won the game, I won what I wanted to win. There are always stakes when you gamble, Mr Singh. So did I. You daughter is really important to me. If I had defeated you today then she would have felt bad but I'd rather win her smile and happiness by losing a chess game. There is no way for me to explain to you why she is so important to me without you thinking I'm crazy but as far as I understand, she is my soulmate. I couldn't find another person in this whole world to live with other than her." He answered to my dad.
"Acha, everyone. We're going to start the mehndi." Mom announced. Everyone started to get their mehndi done. The artist had come to design my mehndi. They all were busy with it. It was taking some crazy long hours.
"With the same, put just a bit of mehndi on Jalal's hands." Ammi told the woman. Jalal told something to the woman. When it was done, we realized that he had my name written on his hands.
"Jalal, you didn't have to do that." Ammi said laughing.
"Why not? Even bhabhi is getting his name writted on her hands. Good job, bhai." Samaira decided and patted on her brother's shoulder.
"Naam toh dil par likh hi chuke hai hum sanam ka, phir haath par likhane mein kya hi harz hai?" He said and everyone went "Ohhoooo..."
I was already hungry but both my hands and legs were already being filled with mehndi. Most people were having dinner. The food smelled really good. Sakshi, Jatin and Samaira were eating right before me.
"I'll get some food for you." Abbu offered. He was also feeding ammi.
"Hatiye, abbu." Jalal pushed him aside.
"What is this? Why are you pushing me?" He asked Jalal.
"What? You feed your wife and I will feed mine. Yes I know you love taking the title of being the Best Husband but leave some space for other people." Jalal told him. Ammi laughed at that.
"Of course he is. Because he's such a wonderful husband, that is why you're this lovely." Ammi added. Jalal rolled his eyes at her.
"Get used to them being romantic wherever it seems well to them. Matlab yeh bhi koi baat hai? Main ek lauta beta hun unka aur mere important day par saari attention kha rahe hai." Jalal commented.
"It is not my fault if I'm that amazing, bete jaan." Abbu pointed out.
"Please, excuse me. I know your secrets. Don't make me spill them." Jalal tried to blackmail him. He chuckled.
"I know some of yours, beta. You wouldn't want your mother to know them. So, we rather keep silent about them. Because if you're going to start, I'm going to end it." He retorted. Jalal gave him a look. I broke into laughter. I have never met anyone who could shut Jalal up. Even back then, there was no one who could match his wits or get away with his creative acts but Abbu is on another level. "Baap Baap hota hai." He added. Everyone laughed at that.
"See, you don't go joining his team. You're supposed to me my team." He added.
