Not really. But me being an indian muslim is so confusing for everyone here in U.K when i tell them that i am from India everyone ( including brits, other indians, pakistanis ) would automatically assume that i am a hindu , if i tell them i am a muslim they will automatically assume i am a pakistani 😕

Once my neighbours ( very sweet old English couple) met me outside and just started chatting and then discussion moved to cricket since there was India-Pakistan cricket match a day before so they started talking about it and they automatically assumed i am a pakistani and started talking in that way showing how they like some pakistani players and it's a good team etc etc so i smiled and told them i am not interested in cricket but my hubby was supporting india since we are indians and they were so shocked turned completely red and apologized to me so many times 😆

Second incident happened at work when i was new and working with this gujrati woman from indian origin (born and bought up in u.k) so excitedly i told her i am from india and she automatically assumed i am a hindu and started going on and on about how bad pakistanis are then she moved to muslims are this and muslims are that ....i just kept doing my work quietly and didn't say anything. After a couple of days ramadan started so i told her i am fasting as its ramadan ....one should have seen her face 😆She worked with me for 2 more days and then changed her team 😆

3rd incident happened when i accompanied my pakistani friend to an arabic/quran teaching school/childcare center to enquire about her kids so the lady greeted us and asked us where we were from etc etc ...they were fine with my friend who told them she is from pakistan but when i told them i am from india they were slightly confused , they said to me do you realise this is a islamic school/nursery so i said yes so the lady said you realise we are muslims and we teach arabic and quran here so i said yes i know even though i am from india but i am also a muslim

Sorry to hear that. Could you describe your experiences if you don't mind?

Mostly people making racist jokes in your presence to other white people tbh... some mocking of my long name too...straight up name calling and stuff I never really experienced it 🤷🏽‍♀️

Things are getting better these days though ngl, awareness about racism is more and now we eve have two Indians in key positions in the U.K. government!

A funny experience I had as a child though was while I was 5 in primary school... we were asked to draw our best friends and I began drawing my friend (another Asian girl) with brown skin and black hair, as she looked... my friend told me to throw away the drawing and draw her with white skin and blonde hair because that’s what pretty girls look like 😂😂... So I listened to her and drew her as a white girl and she did the same for me 😂...

Wonder what the teacher thought after we gave in our drawings 😭😭

I am surprised that posters here have posted so few examples. Racism/prejudice isn't always direct or explicit or violent.. I bet posters here suffer from casual racism and microaggression in every day life..

My cousins live abroad.. in US & Canada.

They have faced some form of racism at University and at Work in their initial years.

Haan par there's no Aman here to enlighten the rest.

And as someone else mentioned, many 'Indian' restaurants here are actually run by Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, thus the difference in tastes. But I still feel even they modify the flavours to cater to the Brits, unki bhi authenticity chali jati hai. There is a reason Italian and Chinese cuisine are so popular globally, they don't mess with their authenticity.

When I was in India, I was labelled a 'takeout enthusiast'. Have been in London for a few years, have 3 Indian restaurants at walking distance and can count the number of times I've ordered Indian food on my finger tips(the count isn't even in double digits).

Oh and sry TM for ranting about food instead of discrimination. I think people in IT sector face less discrimination coz usually there are a lot of us(NRIs) in the team. There's thankfully too much diversity for anyone to discriminate against us(strictly talking about my experience). There's stereotypes galore but you have to pick your battles.

Not really.....but there are some funny incidents that happened....I remember when we just moved to USA....there was this little girl....who asked me who are you....and I said I am an Indian...she looked at me puzzled and then asked...but where are your feathers?? It took me a few seconds to understand what she was saying...she thought I was a native Indian....and then I explained that I was from a country called India...she was I think 4 or 5 ..so probably she didn't get what I was saying...lol..

another one happened when I think my daughter was 6...she was born in Michigan but later we moved to Dallas....so we were standing in a line at cashiers in a store and then this lady in front of us turned and looked at my daughter and said...oh you are so pretty...where are you from...and my daughter said...Michigan....and that lady said...oh where you before that...and my daughter replied very seriously...in my Momma's tummy...both the lady and I burst out laughing at that...😆

When I consider an insult...I always look at the intention...I don't think that in both the cases...people had an intention of insulting me...it was just curiosity on their part.
