Indian literature is so vast, with famous works in all genres, it is hard to decide where to start. It's just so much easier to slip into old habits of reading only English novels. That's why I have now decided to read at least a few Hindi works (novels/short stories) every year. I know I can't do better than that. 😆

That’s a really good habit your mom inculcated in you. Even I feel I should start reading short stories in Hindi especially Premchand’s works.

1. The Hound of the Baskerville by Arthur Conan Doyle

2. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

3. The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

4. The Color Purple by Alice Walker

My worst reads of the year are-

1. The Fault in our Stars by John Green

2. The Valley of Fear by Arthur Conan Doyle

3. Mockingjay (Hunger Games #3) by Suzanne Collins

Somewhere in between these two extremes fell a couple of books-

1. The Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle

2. Pariksha (short story) by Munshi Premchand

3. Carrie by Stephen King

4. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

5. Catching Fire (Hunger Games #2) by Suzanne Collins

Absolutely loved these 2 books you mentioned.

1. The Hound of the Baskerville by Arthur Conan Doyle

2. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Amongst your worst reads I’ve read only The Fault in Our Stars and you are probably the first person I’ve come across who said they didn’t like this book and I agree with you 😛 I’ve always wondered if there was something wrong with me for not liking this book.

As for your books that fell in between I’ve read only Carrie & Where the Crawdads Sing. Carrie was my first Stephen King book so it was a new universe and a different style of writing so I liked it. As for WTCS, I liked it a lot when I read it but it’s not a book that I would go back and re read.

My favourites for the year so far are -

1. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

I’m extremely late to the party but reading classics has always been a task for me so I kept putting this one off. This book was perfect and I don’t think it will ever age; irrespective of the times we are in this book will always be relevant.

2. Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Beautiful beautiful book about family dynamics, racism, unexpressed feelings and how sometimes we never really know the people we are living with. Way better than the overrated Little Fires Everywhere. This book by the same author should have gotten a lot more attention than LFE.

3. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

Brilliant thriller with very well written female characters; the twist in the tale will shock you. It tends to drag a bit in the middle but it is overall a good pacy read.

4. Hunger by Roxane Gay and Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo

Two books set in two different kinds of societies, both deal with the themes of feminism and misogyny prevalent in society. While Hunger is a memoir, KJB 1982, is a fictional piece. I heard them as audiobooks and they are worth listening to/reading.

5. Truly Devious series by Maureen Johnson

Definitely a series that’s not for my age group but I enjoyed it and how! Fast paced, gripping and perfect reads during the pandemic when one wants to forget everything that’s happening around you.

All the feedback I got about The Fault in Our Stars said it was a tear-jerker. And then I went through the whole book, not moved at all. It was the same for the movie (Hindi) as well. So, no, definitely nothing wrong with you. I've just come to expect my tastes to be different in some cases. 😆

Carrie is my first Stephen King book too. And the only one till now. I liked the story but it took me some time to get into it and into his writing style. I also had to do a lot of googling to make sense of local or religious references. All these things made me like it a little less than I normally like thrillers like this. I think I might like his next books more if the style remains the same.

My favourites this year also, includes" you deserve each other " by Sara Hoogle. It's a pretty perfect book. Highly recommended. Also I read the alchemist this year. Yeah i was very late to the party. But my mind was blown. I want everyone whether who reads often or not, to read this book. I am not into self help books but this one just stood out for me. The unhoneymooners By Christina Lauren, the wives by tarryn fisher and simply wild by K. A TUCKER were fun reads too.

Another recommendation in favour of You Deserve Each Other, I think I should get to reading it before the year ends. The Unhoneymooners was a great, fun read. As for The Alchemist, I belong to the minority that didn’t really like it all that much.
The Wives and The Simple Wild are both books that I downloaded on my e reader, don’t know when I’ll get to reading them.

Some of the disappointments of the year so far. All of them were not bad, but they were not as good as I expected it to be.

1. A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro (this was a complete dud for me)

2. 10 Minutes, 38 Seconds in this Strange World by Elif Shafak

This book started off well but lost its way in the second half.

3. Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

I think I expected too much from this book especially after reading Everything I Never Told You.

4. In Five Years by Rebecca Serle

This book was just blah.

5. Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven

Another book that I found quite tepid. It was cute in certain parts, but that’s about it.

6. The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty

This book was quite a disappointment.

The books that I ended by liking a lot more than I expected to.

Just listing them randomly, it’s not in order of preference.

1. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

2. You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

3. This Is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay

This was great and especially in the audiobook format as it is narrated by the author himself.

4. The Taking of Annie Thorne by C.J. Tudor

5. Verity by Colleen Hoover

P.S. In my list of favourite books I forgot to add The Guest List by Lucy Foley. This was a fact paced thriller that I really enjoyed reading.
