You're right on all counts except you are linking two parallel issues that require separate attention.
1. News media houses reporting and pushing unverified news is not the same thing as FOE. Not even close. There is an internal code of conduct that media houses have to follow. Arnab, Navika and co didnt and are being taken to task for that. Plain and Simple. It's NOT a blanket ban. Freedom of expression laws never are.
2. There may have been a lack of "real unity"in facing threats like harassment- that is correct but money laundering and addiction are not issues that producers guilds can take action on.
1. Unverified news and fake news instances should be individually pointed out and yes, channels should retract and be punished if they are found to be serial offenders. But they don’t seem to be specific about which points are supposed to be objectionable/fake. NDTV, the Hindu etc have all in the Past peddled fake news in headlines, then retracting in fine print. Blinds and Gossip mags have been there forever. They ( actors, pedon houses) profit from it mostly. They are now whining about it coz their toxicity & lies have now been exposed on MSM.
2. Money laundering is definitely actionable by prod. Houses as they are responsible for getting finances. If they are in bed with the underworld and hawala channels, they’d obviously never raise their voices. Reg. Addiction, while they definitely can’t take action per se since it’s an individual decision after all, but they can discourage their talents from taking it, stop glamourising drug intake.
At the end of the day, what’s required is a self regulatory body with its own policies and rules about content, financing, sexual harassment etc, which all members should abide by, failing which there can be fines etc..similar to a professional body. There will still be corruption, but at least there will also be accountability. But they are so stupid and full of themselves that this would never ever happen.
