In the real world, yes that is what we want. Civil discussions. But we also need to acknowledge that if in a show you had only some angry words (with restrictions on what those words are) and no amplified emotions, you would also probably have all of the audience multitasking and thinking of other things while watching a show. It won’t hold your attention. And that is not because the story isn’t good, it is just how we as humans are built. You will still absorb the info to under it later subconsciously, but your attention is not on what is being said or shown.

this is not about normalising extreme emotions.

but we need to understand that from ancient times, we as human become alert when there is danger, unknown and when there risk. Anything which does this has our attention because it is matter of our survival. We don’t think other things. Story telling since ancient times used this tactic to amply emotions, add suspense and danger ....show fight of good vs evil where you are good and want to vanquish evil, ...where you want to know happens next. That hasn’t changed since ancient times because of how our brain attention works.

Even today as a result, if in a case chase you don’t have speed, risk and danger you are not going to be at the edge of your seat wondering how they will get out of this. Does this car chase happen in real life. Not to most people I would think. But in that moment you are in that movie or scene, you are there will the good guys and want to get out. Same way in love story when you have one doing wrong, and emotions are amplified, you are there being frustrated, wanting to slap the wrong character, be there to protect the right one. Wanting the wrong one to beg and correct things and be with the right one because ultimately at the end of the story we want closure and a happy ending closure leaves us most satisfied as a audience.

These shows are story telling too. The emotions are applied and over dramatised beyond reality to engage audience ...to make the audience react. Not just in say wow you are good, but saying you are wrong. I wish I could throw some sense into you is also engagement.

For moral reasons and social reasons we might not want in the show, becuase this is not us in real life. This is not what we would accept in real life and yet for the story to engage your brain , it would need the heighten emotions and without it the best of the stories would be overlook and end before their start because we don’t care about what is happening. It is not drawing a reaction for. Us...good or bad,
