Spirit - The Sound Story Of The Film
Balu was known to be a prankster and used to be a live wire during the recordings. His concept was to make the time that he gets to spend on the sets, enjoyable as well as memorable. Here is one such prank shared by Chitra while singing her one of the first telugu songs ‘Poosindi Poosindi Punnaaga’ with our Balu. It was the time when she had no knowledge or grasp of the language when Balu appointed himself as her translator. She innocently wrote whatever he translated, in Malayalam and promptly sang with full romantic feel & fervor. The music director and the director stopped the recording and came running to her asking her where she got the song from. She innocently showed them the lyrics she got from SPB(who by then was hiding and laughing his head off) which basically were a bunch of words like idiot, stupid, brainless fellow, your head etc in telugu. Now imagine those words in the following tune.🤣
Here is where they shared this experience.
The cinematic version of it:
The iconic ‘Botany paatamundi’ - all the male voices were believed to be done by him.
Oh! Man! So many memories associated with Balu's Sir's voice. Growing up in the late eighties, there was not a single soul who did not fall in love with the songs of MPK and a huge part of the credit goes to this amazingly versatile singer. I would wait all week for Cibaca Geet Mala to air on All India Radio on Monday nights, where the songs of MPK would be played religiously. And then wait for Chitrahaar to come on Wednesdays, where I could see the songs in live action. Like many other dorky tweens of that era, even I thought that it was actually Salman singing :D I remember being very taken aback when I finally saw the film and realized that his singing voice and speaking voice do not match at all.
Although, Balu Sir's best works have been in Tamil and Telugu movies, he has sung some precious numbers in hindi too. Songs that we still hear and remember with fondness....which is why I believe that legends like him never die. They forever live in our hearts and every time, we hum one of their songs or listen to it, they come alive in our memories.
Some of my all-time favourite songs of the great SPB;
1. Saathiya yeh tune kya kiya (the 90's romantic emblem, if there was one!).
2. Mere rang me rang ne waali (the song that made the nation fall in love with Salman)
3. Dil Deewana (although Lata's number is the more famous one, I have always loved the male version more.)
5. Dekha hai pehli baar, Saajan ki aankhon me pyaar (not a single shaadi of that time, which did not play this song on loop)
6. Pehla pehla pyaar hai (such a smooth, romantic number)
7. Sun Beliya, shukriya meharbaani
8. Sach mere yaar hai (Still love this song and the pathos with which SPB sung this is just amazing)
9. Yeh raat aur yeh doori (Salman was just adorable in this song and SPB's voice as always suited him to the T.)
10. Aake teri baahon me har shaam lage sindoori (beautiful number)
I hope the great man is in a good place...he has given music lovers and his fans a treasure trove of songs, that will be remembered for generations to come.
Such a beautiful song collection. And a beautiful dedication to his versatility.
RIP SPB.
Wow. I wasn’t even aware that this song existed until now. What a song, what a song. Simply mind blowing! the original was from 70s sung by the young SPB but the following one was sung by the 70+ SPB recently in 2017. What a singer, what a performer! No wonder the audience gave standing ovation after the performance. Made me very emotional, though the song is anything but! :)
