For a long time we had a great crop of heoines, who looked beautiful and could act-Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Saira Banu, Waheeda Rehman, Nutan, nargis, Hema Malini, Vyjantimala, geeta bali, Sharmila Tagore, Sridevi, jaya Prada, Madhuri Dixit, Zeenat Aman, Parveen babi, Raakhee, Dimple Kapadia, Jaya Badhuri, Smita Patel, Rekha.

Then it seems a slow decline. Aishwarya Rai has unique looks and maybe a Deepika, PC and if she shuts up and acts-kangana. Maybe I have reached my mom's generation and oh old is good, new is trash-but just wondering-I really did enjoy the actresses before me too. Just the new ones of not that caliber? Maybe that old movie magic is gone?

Imo lots of factors but Imma try list a few.

Most young actresses have debuted when they were far too young and they are cast opposite actors who are in their late 20s/early 30s and make an odd pair. Like Alia and Ananya.

The grown up actresses are Kriti, Kiara, Tara, Disha, Tripti. But either they don't get good backing scripts (coz uk who gets them) and are stuck with B List projects. Except Kiara (Dhoni, Kabir Singh, Good Newwz) the others haven't yet got that role to breakthrough. These outsiders have the charm, charisma and (even with the right push) talent.

Next, everyone from inside the industry wants to debut. Its all about the overall package compared to the talent. Its like fancy gift wrapping an empty cardboard box. So while they end up having good sin, hair, body, maybe even some p.s to change their appearance...theres no emphasis on acting. So obviously there's no charm there.

They're not that bad. They're a mixed bag just like all other generations. The more deserving ones like Mrunal, Sanya and Tripti don't have the hype attached to them and the not-so-deserving ones like Sara, Ananya and Jhanvi are synonymous with aggressive hype. That's the problem, actually.

It doesn't matter who good movies go to, ultimately it's the audience which makes or breaks films. And if audience rejects someone, no matter how good movies they get, they will end up flat on their face. For e.g. - Arjun Kapoor.

Again it could just be me getting older and moving into that my genration was better mindset. But back then, even vamps seemed to exude starpower. Here is Helen. I don't know why some videos come as undefined-this is yeh mera dil from DON Helen and AB.

So you mentioned Madhuri so that means heroines from mid 90s till now are not as good ?

I mentioned a few. Aiswarya is very unique . Deepika has some special IT factor, PC yes and much as I dislike her personality kanagana is ok, if she focuses on movies . But nothing like back then.

Deepika maybe. I mean take a look at Zeenat Aman in Qurbani or Basanti of Hema in Sholay. Nothing as iconic. Zeenat was something else , but back then there were others at that level too.

In terms of actors, you have the Khans an Akshay who are cosnistently on the top and seem to have the star power. But actresses, after the Sri/Madhuri era, I don't see many in that star power/movie magic role.

That's because men in the industry are allowed to stay or become stars into their 40s, 50s and beyond. They have the time to accumulate star power if they don't attain it while young and in both cases expand it. If Akshay had the shelf life of a heroine his career as a lead would have been over before he ever became a super star.
