This clarification reads very half-hearted and unconvincing to me given the seriousness of the accusation and the reputation damage he endured cuz of it. Even if she didn't start the rumor and was too late in clearing his name, the ball was in her court and she should have been more forceful while clearing his name. But that could be me speaking in retrospect.

She wasn't the one who spread it. After all, she was a newcomer with no clout or backing in the industry so how could she have this much power to spread it. I believe something did happen, that's why she didn't do anything at first.
