Interestingly, in the case of George Floyd’s death, despite a fully grown (~150lbs) man having his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck against concrete, the hyoid bone was intact and there was no other cervical fractures either.

So it’s not necessarily a clear cut set of criteria that of injuries that indicate the cause of death.

Also, in the two studies below, the rate of hyoid bone fractures came out 25%. So even if it’s more probable to see these fractures in manual strangulation/homicide cases, the rate of these fractures in hanging suicides cannot be termed improbable.
