Alta resembles blood, which is symbolic of fertility, passion and prosperity. So it is worn by brides of West Bengal (and other parts of India, it's a part of solaah shringaar) on their wedding and also during Durga Puja. But alta can also be worn by young unmarried maidens because of there cooling effect, mostly on whim though, like I used to. 😆 However Islamic invasion in India brought along Henna or Mehndi that replaced the usage of Alta with Mehndi in rest of the India, but West Bengal still clings into Alta and its blazing red colour that also symbolises new beginning and harmony.

EDIT: Sorry for the huge rant but being a Bengali myself, who is very passionate about her culture and also a literature/history student my hands just could not stop typing. Sorry for boring you. 😆
