Deepika was outstanding , imo.

Meghna’s direction though is always slow and editing is not crisp. She has a very documentary maker vibe. She should try that.

People compare Chapaak with Uyare. Uyare was an uplifting movie with all commercial elements. (Female lead with acid scar becomes air hostess. In the climax she sits on cockpit too and makes an emergency landing )

Chapaak is gloomy with another acid victim at the end.

I never really understood Meghna Gulzaar in that way. She said she took inspiration from the story of Laxmi because she really is an acid attack survivor. Not a victim. The way she continued to move forward in life. Got great career as a ted talker to educate girls about acid attacks among other things. She found true love. But that is not the way narrated it.

Here the point isn't that the movie earned because of Sonam but it's about the fact the fact she didn't bring it down.

And I think that along with Meghna,Deepika brought Chaapak down.

People hating on Sonam because I I didn't like Deepika's performance. Truthfully I think Kangana would have done it better.
