If it was done in between the war on day 17 then none but his sons were supposed to do this

Three of his sons were killed by Nakul on day 18, they were alive till day 17

If Yudi was dead the war would have ended just as it did with Dury's death

Anyhow there is a difference, if Karna actually had more right on the throne than him, then that would mean the contention was between Karna n Duryodhan on who would become the king and Yudhishtir and his brothers fought against the actual contenders of throne and got them killed for the throne and were actually the usurpers

Nothing wrong in that anyway, Kshatriyas did fight and win over the states (usurped) for themselves but for the ever righteous Yudhishtir this would have been against his Dharma

BORI has released a Critical Edition, but Debroy also has a Critical Edition. I used to feel they are independent, but HearMeRoar just said that Debroy's is a translation of BORI CE
