Satya and Bulbbul were together from a very young age.. they played together, wrote books together, created stories together.. So much involvement with each other can lead to romantic feelings, especially when both didnt interact with anybody else their age that much.

Although, I would say Bulbbul was indeed in love and she realized it somewhere. Like someone mentioned how she went pale when Binodini mentioned about rishta and how she lit up when Satya said he did not intend to marry and would instead become a sage.

Satya on the other hand I feel was in love too but being a Thakur and realizing the boundary of their relationship of devar-bhabhi never pondered upon the romantic aspect of it. He was protective of her, but he felt he was doing so because she was his bhabhi not realizing that deep down he also had feelings for her. Bulbbul knew this, hence she kept asking him "Tum kyun itne chidd rahe ho" "seedhe kyun nahi bolte ki tum Sudeep se jalte ho". I felt he was in denial but Bulbbul realized that their relationship was much deeper than what Satya was ready to acknowledge.

At many places I felt, he might have deeper feelings for her..

He kept saying, Bhabhi uska naam mat lo.. why was he so affected? He could have directly punished Sudeep being a Thakur..

They were always lost in each other. When Indraneil calls both of them to mention about London, they are just giggling looking at each other unware of Thakur.

When she is standing alone at the lakeside haveli.. he comes there, observes her face carefully and then mentions about coloring the haveli the same color as her mayka's house and tries to cheer her up.

At the end, he mentions to Sudeep, "Tumhe dekhte hi goli marne ka mann kiya(IMO that was because of jealousy), magar aaj pata chala kyun(he pinned the reason on village murders, though this was not the reason why he felt so) and Sudeep too tells him "Shaq kisi aur baat ka hai, magar saza kisi aur baat ki dena chahte ho"

When Satya realizes that he might have killed Bulbbul, that scream and crying in the end.. that and Sudeep's dialogue "Humari toh dost thi, aapki toh sab kuch thi" I think that is when he realized what Bulbbul meant to him.. Otherwise why cry and leave everything for a woman who indulged in adultery according to him?

Word. Sudeep, the stranger to Satya understood Bulbbul was ‘everything’ to him. That should give everyone the answer. Their dynamics were left to us to interpret how we want to but there was a sense of possessiveness from the start.

Bulbbul knew Satya was jealous of Sudeep. Satya just didn’t understand why OR he didn’t want to because it wouldn’t be right for him to feel that way. It was a very complex relationship.

but why would *he* marry a 5 year old then? please explain what were these adult men's rationale if they weren't hoping to sexually exploit the girls?

its not like they'll have a nice engaging conversations/companionship or that they needed a glorified maid.. the girls would also not be able to produce an heir.. i am just interested in the reason for this tradition..

Back in those days, the norm for royal or semi- royal families was that the bride had to have her first period at her in laws and that way they could be sure that the girl was pure and untouched after she had become a "woman" !

I can't remember the name but i did read a pretty famous novel from 1900s based on pre independence Bengal and it had something like this going on in the plot.

She was his best friend. He did cared for her. But I did not feel that love/romance from Satya ; but Bulbbul loved him.

Exactly.. Theirs was a complex relationship and Satya's character was very grey.. But in the end when he leaves everything saying he doesnt want to be like Indraneil, that gave him some redemption according to me.

I felt he wasnt a MCP, but starting to become one and hence left at the right time.

Without context anyone could have assumed anything, like even I doubted Bulbbul in the beginning when she had her feet on Sudip's lap and he was tying her shoes.. As an audience I didnt know what she went through or what her equation with Sudip was and in the previous scenes she was behaving a bit weirdly.. like laughing loudly when Binodini was explaining Mahendra's death.. So at that point her arc wasnt clear.. So I would give Satya same benefit of doubt.. but having known her from childhood, he should have understood her better or tried to atleast.. Pooch hi leta ek baar.. scene kya hai.. but he became the judge jury and executioner without trying to get behind the whole story.. thats when Bulbbul also had no hopes from him "Tum sab ek jaise ho".

I watched the movie again, this time with my younger brother (fooled him into believing it was a horror/comedy movie like Bhool Bhulaiya/Stree). This allowed me to focus more on aspects that I didn’t have time to explore the first time watching.

From my observation, Satya was extremely fond of Bulbul. He loved her like one would a childhood companion whom you grow up with. She was his best friend, his family. Just like any friendships of such close proximity, there might be a sense of possessiveness, jealousy or insecurity, especially when you witness your ‘usually reserved and shy’ friend being so open and unreserved with a stranger.

I think Satya was taken aback when he saw his sweetly innocent Bulbul laying with her foot resting on another man’s lap. Even I felt uncomfortable coming across that scene (since I had no context of the plot at that time). It would be inappropriate to see any married woman in that position, so I wouldn’t blame her brother in law for feeling weird about it too. When he grew suspicious of their relationship and started snooping, I assumed it was motivated from his role of being the brother of his best friends husband. Maybe there was some underlying romantic feelings involved? However we never had time or more scenes to explore it. We could say that he may have loved her, but never had the chance to let that feeling blossom or emerge? Alternatively, he could have suppressed his romantic feelings by deluding himself into believing that it’s just familial fondness ... In denial perhaps? The one time I saw his attraction was when he first saw her after 5 years. You could tell from Satya’s expression that he was in awe by her transformation.

All I know is that the doctor was the only man who truly loved her till the very end 🥺. I even shipped him and the demon at one point because it seemed like the witch had the hots for him too 😆

Did anyone else feel REALLY uncomfortable with how obvious Bulbul was with her feelings towards Satya? I had to close my eyes and cringe half the time because I was so scared that her suspicious husband was gonna get even MORE suss😳. My brother was having an anxiety attack saying ‘Fcuking hell shes making it so obvious!’ 😆

The answer to your question, here is my take. In today's times the marriage itself would be invalidated because technically it wasn't between consenting parties. One party was not an adult at the time. So you can't even say she got convinced to do something she later regretted. (Even with that argument the responsibility of trying to make the marriage would be on both her and her husband). But as a child she had no idea what she was getting into. The same goes for her falling in love during childhood. She probably fell in love with him at a time she was too young to understand what romantic love was. When she got older she was too far gone to fall out of love. In terms of making it obvious she was never all over him physically. If she was making it obvious through words, she was probably stating what seemed apparent to everyone. Binodini could definitely tell she was in love. Since Satya was the closest to her. He prob knew already too.

Another though just came to mind. A man does not have to be in love to feel jealous. A man does not even have to like you. For an egotistic or prideful man it is a sense of victory to know that any woman likes him. That too a beautiful one like Bullbul. To have her like someone else must have made him feel like he lost another trophy if he was anything like his brother.

The other sign I sort of got is he was very observant of her. When he asks her on the way back from the widows hostage what happened to that sweet innocent girl I use know? He can tell she has changed? Why could he tell? Because he hadn't forgotten what she use to be like even after all these years. Even if he remembered that by having a good memory. He must have been observing her closely since he got back to notice her changes? He wasn't notified of everything she had been through. Still he could sense it was a Bullbul different from the one he use to know. So he took notice of her to say the least. Binodini had become a lot less prideful. Did he notice that? That was something he only did with Bullbul and not his entire family. From observing her to remembering exactly what she use to be like. Clearly he must have missed her to some extent when he was gone.

Wonderful post!

Also, yes I too got so anxious when Bulbul was so obvious with her reaction to Satya getting a rishta and leaving for London LOL. Like someone said earlier, her whole life was just spent in the haveli so Satya was the only window she had to the outside world.

She was so terribly naive, which made the transformation even more beautiful. The transition from a naive, hurt, violated girl (after the rape scene) to the goddess like calm, confident, and bold woman (after she comes back to life) was brilliantly acted and shot 👏 The way she very gently smiles at Paoli Dam was so friggin scary actually.

I can understand why and how she fell in love with Satya. It completely makes sense for her to feel that way towards him. It was just REALLY uncomfortable when I knew as a viewer that Thakur was starting to view their relationship suspiciously. Prior to Binodhni planting seeds into his mind, I’m sure Thakur viewed their relationship as a close-knitted childhood bond filled with childlike fondness. It was after Binodhni poisoned his thoughts that he began to interpret all of Bulbul’s actions differently.

As a viewer who was aware of his train of thoughts, it was torturous watching Bulbul’s expressions filled with pinning and sorrow because I was so scared of the outcome! I didn’t want her to get caught out or have anything used against her (whether it was her tears for him, the stuttering uneasiness when talking about his marriage, or her sorrow at his departure). I was anxious that absolutely anything can be trialled against her so I was extremely sensitive to every action and expression 😆. I pretty much died and had my soul emerge from a heart spasm when Bulbul ran down the stairs upon hearing Thakur came back and she was frantically looking around for Satya. I fast forwarded the scene because my stomach hurt.

Again I don't think she was aware of the extent Binodini might have been poisoning Thakur. Again if you heartbroken and you know you might not see you love for a long time. Of course it will show to some extent no matter how much you try to control it. Like Aish's character in Devdas knew she would get into trouble for running to Devdas while he was dying she still did. Love is love. Thank God her husband was sophisticated enough not to beat her. Although he might have punished her otherwise. Nor did she have anyone who would prey her sexually.
