This is true also! There's many terrible therapists, doctors, psychiatrists etc you name it. That's why when people get therapy they need to make sure they find the right one and change it if it's not helping them.Originally posted by: Deviant_Pixel
The question is was he going to a psychiatrist or therapist. If it’s the psych, no offense but many of them are just happy to prescribe pills and that’s the end of that. ESP in desi community, my sister suffers from anxiety to the point she will throw up in the morning out of sheer anxiety, the psych never even tried to listen to her kuch, bas straight pills.
Would be surprised that many of these docs don’t even listen to the patients, usually therapists do that and pick up on these signs as they actually have talk therapy with patient. Calibre also matters I guess, maybe he did not pick up on the signs.

I am sorry to hear that and hope u are doing good now.
I totally get the confidentiality part....my point is that if at some point the doctor thinks that the patient may loose control over his mind...at that point shouldn't they be informing someone.....or taking some action?
Thanks ...i am in a much better place now 😃
Like i said they had a questionaire which i had to fill on every appointment with very specific questions about suicidal thoughts or even thoughts about harming your self and you had to rate it according to what is more likely and the psychiatrist had informed me that they share information with relevant people/department if they feel the patient will harm themselves
I'm not a psychiatrist but I am in medicine. I don't know about India, but in Canada, according to our oath and confidentiality regulations, we cannot disclose a patients medical history or details to anyone (not even family) without consent, if the patient has the capacity to make sound decisions. In other words, a 'sane' decision-maker. We can, however, include a family member/spouse within the circle of care, with the patients consent, to act as a substitute decision maker and/or caregiver if the patient is dependant for care (in your husband's case) or has lost the ability/will lose the ability to make sound decisions. If the patient is at risk of harm to self or others, a code white is called and they are immediately kept under watch. In the unit I work in, a Neuro assessment is done on every patient to understand their mental status and care is provided accordingly
In Sushant's case, I don't think anybody anticipated the situation to be as severe as it turned out to be. Probably was struggling more than he led on. Sometimes medical professionals also make mistakes with diagnostics because although depressed, Sushant might've not come across as severely disturbed or acted not to be. Regardless, this is a question only the doctor and psychiatrist who treated him can answer.
i guess this question only the psychiatrist who treated sushant can answer and also depression there are also stages so i guess on the psychiatrist can answer nowadays medical has become a business not only psychatrist but all other departments too doesn't diagnose properly but definitely eat peoples hard earn money
Hi Blue-Ice. I am a psychiatrist and have worked in India till 2017. See confidentiality works as far as there is no risk of harm to patient or others. From that very badly written note linked to the other post, it seems he stopped going to the psychiatrist. If there is no information, one cannot alert authorities. I cannot break confidentiality if I dont know the risk. If I suspect it, I would ideally contact the next of kin. If the patient hasn't given me one, I would ask him him get someone he trusts to either meet me or contact me. But I cannot legally or ethically force him to either give me a name or contact details. Many patients dont want to let their families or close friends know that they went to a psychiatrist. Despite asking to bring a relative repeatedly, I have myself treated people without them because the patient chooses to - and if the patient has capacity to make that decision, I cannot force him otherwise. I dont know how helpful this is. PM me if you want to know more. Take care.

Thanks Mages. There is a lot of misinformation about mental health and am happy to help clear doubts.
Am not active now on IF but this tragedy brought me back.
The thing with antidepressants is, if abruptly stopped, the withdrawal symptoms are too overwhelming..Doctors always advise not to stop it abruptly . The dosage has to be gradually brought down. Else you will become totally numb, irritated, angry and what not. You wont even feel like talking to anyone . Infact , talking is a pain in such circumstances because the mind keep repeating "anyway no one going to understand me"
Also, unless you are on suicide watch, it is totally patient's responsibility to keep taking the medicine without a break until the next appointment. Doc cant know about it unless patients tell them.
