@Bold - This may be due to the fact that the quartet was already taken by the Pandavas?

Possible! Although Karna was a match for the Panchalas, the other 3 - Duryodhan, Dushashan and Shakuni weren't. In fact, on day 18, Duryodhan fled the field after losing a battle to Dhrishtadyumna - the same warrior who was defeated in every battle he fought w/ Drona, Ashwatthama, Kripa and Karna. The Panchalas themselves could have taken those 3 out, had the above 4 warriors not been combatants.

Duryodhan was definitely not a good enough warrior. He might have been better than Bheem in mace fight(I doubt it but possible) but no where he was capable enough to fight in battlefield. Mace fighting could only help him in a duel on foot, but war mostly needed things like Arrows, swords with which you could fight at a distance.

Duryodhan was easily defeated by just about everybody in battle. His only success - on day 18, he killed a Yadava warrior named Chekitan b4 he was forced to flee the battlefield by Dhrishtadyumna.

If it hadn't been for all the elders and veterans of the Kuru court - Bheeshma, Drona, Kripa, Bhurishrava, Somadatta, Ashwatthama, et al, I doubt that he'd even have had the courage to fight the Pandavas w/ only Karna at his side. Not just that, every one of his brothers was easily killed by Bhima, not just w/ maces but w/ various weapons. Duryodhan would have too, had the final battle not been a mace duel - let's say swords or bow/arrows were used.
