Yes that explains it at least. I am not sure of Bengal though. Why such distaste.

One reason why Karna is so loved in Bengal is however because of Rabindranath Tagore's Karna Kunti Sambad. I don't agree with his POV but it's a beautiful text.

Bang supported Kauravas too


Historically (even in known history) Anga, Banga and Kalinga were sort of strategic partners (was probably necessary to ensure their safety from the neighbouring giant caller Magadh) they had their decisions unidirectional

Since AngaPradesh (Karna's state) and Kalinga (father in law state of Duryodhan) supported Kauravas, Bang probably had no other option
