I watched it again this morning.
Feeling something is missing
Actually, over the last few weeks, I've been watching Anand Sagar's version of the serial, and actually chuckling at the Swarna Kamal episodes (Subscribe to Anand Sagar Ramayan if you wanna see uploaded episodes)
Also, now that both those serials are behind us, we do get to objectively see both, and while there were authenticity issues w/ both serials, I found myself enjoying the Anand Sagar serial more. Particularly on the Uttarkand, I actually liked Kush-Luv's extended interactions w/ their grandmothers. I also liked them splitting up the narration into a second day, leaving everybody at the cliffhanger of what happened to Sita after she was exiled, and some emotional conversation b/w KL and KSK
I do agree w/ RamKiSeeta that I'd have liked them to have expanded on the post Sita part of the story before Lakshman's demise. The narration by Valmiki was pretty lame. In fact, I think they could have tossed in a few more episodes like
- Kush-Luv mourn and get to know their cousins and rest of their family. An episode or so of heartwarming moments, including the kids talking or playing w/ each other, maybe mace fights, archery or whatever
- Passing of Kaushalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra (maybe one episode, maybe spread that out w/ other events in b/w). Maybe also show the passing of Urmila, Mandavi and Shrutakirti
- Budhajit inviting Rama/Bharat to invade Gandhara, and Rama sending Bharat, along w/ Taksha and Pushkal to Gandhara
- Rama going w/ Lakshman and Lakshman's kids to Karupadadesha to battle, leaving Kush in charge of Ayodhya to see how he runs it when he gets back. Luv is sent to Dakshin Kaushal
- Bharat's and Lakshman's sons are crowned kings of their various kingdoms
- Shatrughan crowns his sons kings of Mathura and Vidisha and returns to Ayodhya, where he joins Rama, Lakshman and Bharat
- Then show the Kaal visit and Lakshman's demise
- Show - as in the original - Rama offering to crown Bharat to succeed him, but Bharat proposing Kush's name instead
- Kush is crowned King of Ayodhya
- Rama and his entire retinue retire to the Sarayu, where they make their final departures
- For the final shot, show Vishnu & Lakshmi (using the same Rama-Sita actors) on Sesha-nag, and show Kush, Luv, Angad, Chandraketu, et al all doing their water rites and end it there
All of the above would have felt more complete
