I wonder how the King and Queen and the people of Mithila would have come to terms with Seeta's exile?

I remember a scene, where Dandaprabha, Seeta's friend comes and tells Rama, "Aaj ke baad koi Mithilavaasi Awadh mein apni beti na bihaaye!" (After today, no person of Mithila shall wed their daughter in Awadh/Ayodhya)

Janak Raja, and Sunaina maa must have been devastated! 😭

Actually I had read somewhere (not sure of its validity) that in Mithila Sita and Ram are not worshipped together.

And this to I know that we in Bihar do not marry in the month when Ram Sita got married

I heard that folklore too.

I don't know how true it is, but I did read in Kalidasa's Raghuvamsam that King Janaka continued to be a confidante and advisor to Rama, and Rama gave him the position of father and respected him, so I'm sure there were still cordial relations between Mithila and Ayodhya. After all, Mithila's other daughter Urmila was still wed to Lakshman, as well as Mandavi and Shrutakirti (though one can argue they are Sankasya nagari's daughters). Mithila would not insult Ayodhya when one of its princesses is still living a happily wedded life there.

I'm sure Janak and Sunaina mourned Sita's loss in private, but Janak was also a Rajarshi. He was at that point beyond human attachments, so I guess he looked at the whole situation more philosophically.

Yeah, there was that scene.

I also remembered that years ago, someone else had uploaded it all on YouTube (since deleted), there was a scene before their meeting w/ Janak/Sunaina where when Rama and Lakshman enter the gates of Mithila following Sita's exile, all the citizens just turn their backs on them and snub them. Absolutely reminiscent of the treatment Bharat and Shatrughan got from Ayodhya when they entered following Rama's exile. But if you look at current YouTube uploads, you won't find that scene.

Cutting those scenes feels like censorship to me - like Mithila people are not supposed to resent the treatment of Sita by Ayodhya? 😡

The version I watched had Dandaprabha give him the stink eye while welcoming Rama but that was inside the palace.

I didn't like how Sunaina kept saying they were ladki-waale and hence couldn't speak their mind. These sort of regressive attitudes are what keep me from enjoying Uttara Kanda fully.

As far as I remember such things weren't a natural part of the previous Kandas...🤔

These comments weren't a part of the original epic either. People in the Treta yuga and Dwapara yuga spoke their mind in many instances, both from the bride and groom's sides. In some ways, they were more progressive than our society now. Unfortunately, even Ramanand Sagar added a few dialogues in RSR and SK like this, mirroring current society's thinking (like having Krishna proclaim that Yashoda was a superior mother to Devaki). They were few and far between, but they were there. Best to just ignore them, because most of the show was excellent.

But yeah, Sunaina never says anything like this in the original epic. In fact, Valmiki's Uttar Kand (which already had some interpolations) doesn't even show Ram and Lakshman going to Mithila.

Right - the part I described was a brief part - about a minute or so - b/w Rama deciding to go to Mithila on hearing that Sunaina was ill, and then arriving at the palace. On the road, the Maithilis turned their backs on them while they were on their way, and Rama & Lakshman understood

Aside from the stuff about the wife's side not having rights, these sort of scenes were creative licenses that were inserted, but I agree: showing something that was not known to be a part of the cultural profile of that era didn't do too much for it

Also, I thought I heard her name as Chandraprabha. (Anand Sagar's Ramayan changed it to Malavika)

Which version had that Mithila ignoring Ram scene? Only that part edited or entire episode?

I hate it whenever anyone in any TV serial praises the lead couple comparing them like Ram-Sita jodi. Such scenes happening from years. It's disturbing to think our any favourite TV being like Ram-Sita pair that also in today's times. Kuch cheezon ko usi zamaane me rehne do instead of getting inspired from it.
