When it comes to male actors there's no ambiguity. You are either a superstar (as in generating a lot of movie business revenue) or you are not.
When it comes to female actors, there are only a few who are considered as true superstar material (as in generating a lot of movie revenue). A lot of times, producers give hit tag to a actor-actress jodi, than give the heroine a superstar status with good lead roles. Bollywood is predominantly male-dominated.
But yes, Taapsee, Vidya, Sridevi, Kangana and many others have tried to change this trend, but inconsistently so, in terms of 100 crore movies.
Most female actors are only relevant by being on top beautiful faces list, sexy or most desirable lists, setting fashion trends, item songs etc. Madhuri, Aishwarya Rai, Sonam, Deepika, Kareena, Malaika and many others are the 2nd kind.
A female actor, if good-looking even if mediocre in talent goes a long way ahead of a female actor who may be genuinely talented but not good-looking, in terms of brand endorsements, press coverage etc. For example, most people don't remember Konkona Sen Sharma (as compared to Diana Penty or Ileana D'Cruz) even though she has been a part of many successful bollywood movies.
Yup and groundbreaking. Nandini made a superstart overnight and she was at her peak post-Devdas. Then obvious bad film choices, but she still was in demand despite her flops and still had tons of offers so if there wasn't a market demand she would ahve washed away. What's the most surprising if the impact she has on the newer generations. There's so many younger TikTok/IG influencers who are inspired by her characters and do character remakes which speaks to her work and her influence. And she has a huge following globally, which can't be said about everyone.
