even if we look at it from the point that Raja ka bada beta will be king.

then Pandu was made the king as Dhritrashtra was blind. This was done with Rajyaabhiesheik. Without this a king is not truly a king.

When Pandu left for forest, he did not abdicate the throne but ruled from forest. And when he died Dhritrashtra was given the responsibility to handle the kingdom until Pandu's kids are grown up to handle the kingdom. this was the reason kunti and pandavs were called back so that they can be trained.

Dhritrashtra never had Rajyaabhiesheik, as it was made clear that he was to look after the kingdom until Yudi is old enough. However he believed that he was the king and hence should pass the kingdom down his own lineage. This wrongly assumed belief was the root of the MAhabharat war.

in a way we can also say that Dhritrashtra was interim king and the next king should be the eldest son of the real king not interim king

My opinion, may be right or wrong, is that Duryodhana did have a strong claim on the throne.

He was the eldest son of the eldest son of Vichitraveerya, as he mentioned. If Dhritarasthra was not blind, then he definitely would be the uncontested king and being his son, Duryodhana did have a claim.

However, Yudhisthir was elder to him and he was the son of the last coronated king. Dhritarasthra was never crowned after Pandu died. He acted as the interim representative until the next king could be chosen.

Also, I am not sure if this is entirely true, but most believe that Yudhisthir had the public favour and that is something that cannot be ignored.

Yes there were two princes with strong claims on the throne. hence there was a need to choose between them based on their merits as both had claims.

Duryodhan - was cruel and this can be seen when he tried to burn not only his cousins but also his aunt alive. He was not a true kshatriya (this is defined by the virtue of protecting women) this was shown when he humiliated Draupadi

Yuddhishthir was level headed and always followed dharma. Yes he had his own flaws and mistakes. The biggest one being dyut and staking Draupadi, but he was also strong enough to accept it and repent the mistakes - which he did in forest. He also never tried to harm duryodhan in any way to take out competition

in short Yudi had more merits than Dury and hence was ideal to be the next king.
