To be honest he could've entirely avoided it. And the saddest part is Shantanu wasn't even worth it, IMO 😆

However, it is a little heartening to know that Bheeshma and Satyavati became really good friends after Shantanu's death especially owing to the fact ke they were pretty close in age. They both depended on each other very much.
Also, Satyavati never really forgave herself for being the reason for which Hastinapur lost such a fine King like Devavrata. It is clear from her repeated attempts to persuade Bheeshma to take the throne after Shantanu's passing, or at least provide an heir.
We must remember, even though she never pushed for Bheeshma's reinstatement while Shantanu was alive, that was the very first thing she tried the moment she received the charges as regent for Chitragupta after Shantanu's death!
