The Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929, passed on 28 September 1929, in the Imperial Legislative Council of India, fixed the age of marriage for girls at 14 years and boys at 18 years which was later amended to 18 for girls and 21 for boys. It is popularly known as the Sarda Act, after its sponsor Harbilas Sarda. It came into effect six months later on 1 April 1930 and applied to all of British India.[1][2][3]

Come to think of it the timeline is very damadol here. The Sati prohibition act and widow remarriage act were already in place and this show is set in 1902, then why are the Sati prohibition and Widow remarriage act not shown. It should be a law already. Or was it just restricted to the cities and not villages? And by the time Bondita completes her education, tab to Sati pratha and widow remarriage to aur bhi jyaada reinforce ho jana chahiye. Very odd.

It’s not like we’ve ever followed rules; there are still kids getting married and there are still vidhwa-asharams in India; where widows lead a simple life. The girl child in many parts of India is still considered undesirable. The laws were in place but people did what they wanted to do

The acts were there but did people specially villagers who use to be very rigid about these customs followed it No when widow remarriage act was passed there was huge uproar against this actit and against IShwar chandra vidayasagar the main behind this reformation. He was from bengal the man fought throughout his life even after the law was passed to make people accept it he was successful to some extent but still i dont think in small towns like one where the story is situated people were in favour of such acts there is a reason why story is mainly based in small town/village because even though law was there people were still reluctant to accept it
