I’m going to play devil’s advocate and say that they might have wanted to show that Rishi rebelling against MJ because of Maya and getting out of his shadow would’ve been cool but then they wanted to stick to the brand and her killing anyone was inevitable.

But execution wise it was screwed..

that is probably what hapened. they wanted it to make it different so they screwed over the main character in the process.
