First, the good parts. Here we have a man who not only is interested in addressing topics never addressed before, but is confident enough to address taboo issues, challenge his masculinity and glamour despite being an actor after all in an industry driven by looks (with exceptions like rajkummar rao and nawazuddin as well as vicky kaushal) and still be sure of the box office because there is a good script, good acting, good direction and relatability with the audience.
However,I have mixed feelings about Ayushman's choice of films. He's stellar at the selection of his scripts. But his attempt to break the formula has started to become some sort of formula itself. We have seen actors defining a genre for themselves. Shahrukh has been hailed as the King of Romance. Akshay Kumar brings the flavor of nationalism. And Ranbir Kapoor has played the cosmopolitan man-child in a string of films. While there isn't anything wrong with that, a formula can become generic and lose its steam in the long run. Khurrana has enterprised upon subjects that were never considered bankable before. But that shouldn't limit him to explore the actor in him, to occasionally do a film like Andhadhun.
Yes, he is breaking boundaries. But he is also making it obvious. There is an inevitable niche that he has created for himself. I somewhat know how these movies are going to pan out. When you can spot the obviousness and the inevitability in the choice, then I feel the choice in itself has become a boundary that needs to be broken (or told with a refreshing take).
The uniqueness of the subject gets lost in formulaic treatment.
I think it would be nice if he chooses some more light hearted, ( without social taboos or social problems being dealt with) or some nice commercial films, thrillers etc.
does anyone else agree with me?
